I was going to make a first attempt at bath bombs. I was wondering what everyone uses as a mold to get that nice ball shape? And if you use half a ball mold, how do you then get the two sides to stick together? Does anyone know where to find a good bath bomb mold? Thank you!!

I've used christmas acrylic ball ornaments from Michael's. They snap open into halves. You overfill each half, than press them together. Or use a meatballer the same way.

When I first started making these I paid a fortune to get some online. One day while in Michaels when I was looking at the clay sculpting items I noticed that the plastic Christmas balls were on the bottom shelf in thise area. Maybe they put them in the same area in all the stores? I really don't know but I did buy a lot of them so that I wouldn't have to buy them online when mine wore out. They also had several different sizes which I bought as well. Now I can make small, med, lg and ex large (1lb) bath bombs! I think you should go back to Michaels and search for them. They are only $1.00 there and I paid somewhere between $7-10 online plus shipping. I also bought some stainless steel ones from some woman named Kathy that has a video on youtube on how to make them.

Good luck! I'm sure you can get them at Michaels.

Hello squamy,
I just got some bath bomb molds on e-bay, I paid 9.99 plus 2.41 for shipping for a set of five molds, because I couldn't find them at Michaels and the soap making suppliers have them but couldn't find any that were as cheap as this ones, here is the link in case you are interested, the molds were crystal clear and once I used them they look like frosted ornaments now, but they still work.

Thank you all for the help!

I ended up buying a meatballer off of amazon for fairly cheap. (Not being a cook I had never even heard of a meatballer before hehe)

Ido, I am definitely going to buy those molds. I looked high and low at Micheals. I found something very similar for candle making and it was only 1 mold for $25!!!! No way was I going to pay that. 5 molds for 9.99 is a deal.

Do you have to use a mold? I am just wanting to play around and see if I can make some, and I have everything except molds. I was wondering, if I am not too concerned with how they look, but just want them to work right, if i could try just making a ball with my hands. Do you have to wear gloves? Also, I am wondering if I can mix in a plastic mixing bowl or if it needs to be Stainless steel or something?

Thanks for the tips!

I used one of the teach soap recipes for "Fizzy Milk Bath Bombs" - the shea butter and corn starch bc I didn't have those, and it still turned out great! I mixed in a pyrex mixing bowl (glass) and but I did use plastic measuring spoons for the fragrance. It's all I have, but they are only for soap. I have some metal measuring spoons but they aren't stainless steel so I was afraid of possible corosion, because they are old and I use them to cook with. Anyways. It actually worked out fine. I just watched a couple youtube videos of people mixing by hand. I just wanted a few to play around with myself so I scooped the mix up in my round 1tbsp measuring spoon (they make mini half circles, similar to the larger ones like the ornaments) and then either just tapped or pushed it out. There were a few that I successfully managed to stack on top of eachother and they stuck together once dried. My question to you all is, how big do you usually make your bombs? Once packed, the 1tbsp bombs were about a quarter oz when weighed. Then again, I didn't weigh my other ingredients while I was combining because the recipe on teach soap didn't weigh, it called for cup measurements. As an afterthough though, I will both way and use my cup measurement when mixing so I know exactly how much of my supplies I used as they are in pounds when I buy them, not cups :D I need to price how much it cost me to make them but for now guesstimating will have to do.
I am thinking to do a 1.5oz bomb that is half a circle, or a 3 oz that is a whole would be better. I had to throw about 4 or 5 of the little once to make a difference, but that little scooper was all i had in lieu of a mold.

Anyways, thanks again for all the tips on here!

Whenever you package your bombs to sell, do you shrink wrap them or what?

I don't shrink wrap mine. But each ball gets wrapped in paper.

Ok. Like what tissue paper? Hmmm, I saw some yesterday that had shrink bands. Unless you put them in a polybags and then ship them or something, I guess that would work. If I dd that, at least I guess I would have some where to stick a label. How do you guys attach labels to your bombs?
