Hello all,
I am a newbie and have a couple of questions. Currently i am vacationing in Sedona AZ which is a very cool place pretty artsy, very beautiful lots of spas and a general disposition towards more natural foods, soaps etc. I have had the luxury of reading all kinds of soap labels while here (i know-i'm a bit of a dork ;) But last night i picked up a soap that has beef tallow as an ingredient, it smelled great, the accompanying lotion also used beef tallow and i sampled it, my hands feel great AND the scent stayed with me for HOURS - i am talking we went out to eat (washed hands) i used the ladies room (washed hands) you get the picture. I am curious to know if the tallow aided in the scent staying with me for so long? Also I am curious to know more about this ingredient, namely where can i get it (i live in NYC)?

Second question - i saw in a post that canned coconut milk can be used, has everyone ever tried evaporated canned milk? If so did it work out and how did you use it?

Thanks so much!
Erin

I would ask your butcher next time you go to the store where you can find beef tallow in your area. Evaporated canned milk has a lot of sugar. I would not go above 1 TBS. per lb. of soap. Otherwise it could overheat and separate.

I use tallow in most all of my soaps . Soapers Choice sells it, they are in Ohio I think. I get mine from a local farmer in the fall and winter months when he does butchering. If you get it from a farmer you must render it yourself. But it will probably cost very little.
The canned coconut milk I use ( at 1 tbsp. per lb. ) is evaporated. I use it to boost the lather in my cp.
And no I don't think the tallow was why you could smell the soap long after you washed with it. I think it was the amount of EO or FO in the soap.
