Hello,
I am new to this forum. I make a goat's milk soap I consider(and others who buy it) it to be a very nice product.
I have recently spoken to another soapmaker who tells me that all the benifiacial oils used in this process are ruined when combined with the lye.
We also make a very nice liquid soap with potassium hydroxide. she says if we are adding water ~ which we do, distilled water after cooking the soap to thin it down~we will need a preservative.
any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, I dunno about *ruined*...but I generally make "regular" lye soap, and then I also have a goat milk soap I make. The recipies are not too TOO different from each other, and I can tell a BIG difference in the result.

And the "other soapmaker" you've talked to? Why would we use any different oils at all if that was the case? Why wouldn't we just only use olive oil, or only use shea butter, or only use coconut oil?

Methinks he/she painted with too broad of a brush on that one...or maybe they meant something else that I'm not understanding since I wasn't there. But, IMO there's a REASON there's lots of different oils, herbs, compounds in existence...to USE!

Liquid soap....I have no experience in that area. Sorry!

Some oils do loose some of their properties when the lye is combined. However all of us superfat, so some of the goodnes of those oils stays. You could laways HP and add any oils/butters after the cook.

I do add a preservative to my liquid soap. The added water changes the PH of the soap, making it a breeding ground for germs and bacteria, even the ones you cannot see. Better be safe than sorry, I always say.

Thanks to you all! that does help! This person was just telling me why she doesn't make the goat's milk soap with lard and lye. She uses a different method and she does have a nice product. I have had many people swear by our prodcut so I know it is good. I just want to improve it. We do not use expensive oils. I am wondering if anything can be added after the lye and oils combine for skin moisturizing?
In our making of the liquid soap, distilled water is heated to boiling and added to the mass which absorbs the water making it a usable product. If we do add a perservative or need one, can anyone suggest something?
