I guess I was under the impression that you had to use mostly coconut because it can still lather in salt water. But in reading your post, Magic Hands, that might not be the case?

The fatty acid composition of PKO is pretty darn similar to coconut. What you actually need for lather in salt water, or in a salt bar, is a very high percentage of lauric acid in your formula. Coconut is the most common way to get that, but PKO works, too. :)

Well after 3 weeks I finally tried the salt bar.
The lather was... surprisingly adequate. Not thick and bubbly like some of my other soaps but it did the job and was cleansing but not drying. And even with 70% salt I didn't really notice the pumice texture I associate with some salt bars. It's not my favorite but it's very nice. I really like the lemongrass and Teatree blend. I'm calling it "Lemon Zest".

I just tried another batch with almost the same recipe. This time I lowered the Olive oil to 15% and added 20% Babassu. I could have used Coconut or more PKO but I just wanted to keep this one CO free. With less Olive the bar seemed to heat up a lot more. After 4 hours I unwrapped it and it was solid and still QUITE hot. I was JUST able to cut it without crumbling... but I could not have waited any longer. I guess it gelled but it looks like most of my un-gelled soaps.

The numbers on this look much better for lather and hardness... I guess I'll just have to cross my fingers that it isn't too drying.
