I am so excited. A girl at the flea market gets authentic african black soap from her mother in Ghana. It was so gross, soft and smelly, can't wait to try a hunk in the shower. She almost sold out before I could get a hunk. It comes wrapped in brown paper.

My plan is to make a shea and tallow base of cp soap and rebatch the african soap in it, scent it with french vanilla and call it African American Brown Soap   8)

Have fun! I find African black soap terribly drying.

I've read where people shred it into another soap with a higher superfat. It think it must be it's novelty, because I don't find anything special about it besides the label appeal.

I saw this being sold at a local festival recently and started doing some research out of curiosity.
Seems like some people do sell authentic ABS - which sounds like a crap shoot when it comes to having a balanced recipe. The lye comes from burnt plant leaves and the oils are mixed right into that. So there's no telling what sort of lye concentration or superfat you are dealing with... let alone what plant or ash remnants still remain in the mix.

I see no benefits other than label or historical appeal.

However others are selling something that looks like traditional CP that has simply been dyed black. My guess is that those who claim to use ABS daily with wonderful results are using this version.

I definately agree about the regular use of the "dyed soaps". Some companies have almost made ABS a "brand name" instead of a specific product.

Made my soap, hooooray!!! The tallow version. My palm oil wasn't delivered today  , can't trust my neighbors to get my packages, so I'll be waiting tommorow.

Recipe

28.8 oz tallow
22 oz of shea
6 oz each of olive and soybean
I think 5 oz of castor
banana
chocolate
oatmeal
and some jojoba oil rebatch

and last of all African Black soap!!!!

I made a nice incense type fragrance with nag champa, vanilla, lemon and a street oil called black butter from a local soaper...It's a hot process batch, can't wait to unmold...probably around 2am....

What is a black butter? Unrefined cocoa butter? Do you have the SAP value for this?

Black soap is used by some daily in Ghana. There are actually different recipes depending on the region it's made. Some people make it using only palm kernal oil, others include cocconut oil, shea butter, honey, even milk. It can be very drying. I'm curious to know what type you received from the girl. There is a newer version people are making that is a round ball and it is kind of cream color. A lot of people complain that this type causes their skin to itch. I haven't been able to find out what they are putting in it. I don't use this type. Black soap is good for people with acne, I mix it with tea tree oil for my son.

so far I've purchased from two different african vendors. One batch was shaped like a large hand sized bunt cake, it was loose and crumbly but when you cut it open there were several quarter pea sized black gooey spots in what was overall the consistancy of ginger bread.

The second batch was the size of a 32 oz cup, cone shaped and tightly packed and appears to be the same composition as the first. It took a couple times for me to understand "how" it is used, basically like a bath gel, you crumble some in water the night before and dip your wash cloth in the jell. Perhaps diluting it makes it less drying, I was using it like bar soap and it was harsh.

I rebatched it and sold out in one day. It has great label appear in the urban community.

Black soap works for skin issues such as ringworm, and rashes. My son had an unidentified rash( teenage boys  lol), our Dr. suggested Black soap. I went to the local health food store, and it came all ugly, and strange looking ,not black at all. Soap cleared rash up in a day. Seen it work on ringworms too. So it does work. Maybe its different skin types.
