I am very excited to be on this board!!! I want to make my own body wash without lye. Is that possible? I am thinking it is because grandmothers were making soap for their families before lye was discovered. I ppreciate all teh help and advice I can get. Also any recipes you ladies have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't want to use lye, your other option is to use lab made surfactants. Or you could buy a premade liquid soap base from www.BrambleBerry.com

Lye has always been used to make soap. Our grandmmothers may not have known it as lye, or they may have made their own using ashes, but the it has always been part of the process.

Petra's absolutely right - lye has always been part of the process. And soapbuddy's right, too - you can use a premade base if you don't want to work with lye personally.

If you do want to make liquid soap (with lye) a body wash is a good place to start. A body wash is less difficult to make than a shampoo.
