Teach Soap

I would like to know how to get my soaps to lather up a bit more. It takes a lot of time to lather the ones I make.. I was also wondering. can I put something like glitter in my soap? If I can, what would it be? I don't want anyone to scratch themselves while bathing...YIKES!!! If there is something like that, would it have any effect on any other additives I may have but in?

Hi Angelina,

I think someone once mentioned you can add sugar to your soap to make it lather better. Not tried it myself, though.

As for glitter, there are 'cosmetic glitters' you can buy that are very fine and won't scratch the skin. These are suitable for soap. There's also mica which gives more of a shimmer than a glitter though.

I flirted with the idea of adding glitter, but the fact that one is cautioned not to get it in their eyes, changed my mind. I know it's a small gamble, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Even as fine as it is, there apparently is a possibility of scratching the eyeball. I do use a lot of mica.

i have a permantent scar in my eye because of getting glitter in it when i was 9.. i dont use glitters in soap and glitter attracts children, and children will not remember in most cases when you say do not put this near your eyes.. plus i think it would be aturn off to parents by telling kids this.. but yes micas would be a great alternative..

adding sugar to MP will only make it sticky. sugar will add lather to cold process soap (if i read the cold process forum correctly )

Do you add any additional oils or anything? If so you might be adding a little too much. What base do you use? A regular clear or opaque base lathers up really well so it might be down to the type of base you're using.

I think the sugar tip was given for CP/HP soaps, far as I remember.

I do add glitter but less than 1/8th tsp for an entire loaf... it adds a hint of something at times (don't use it in everything).. I do love mica's though!

Adding sugar to MP will not give you more lather. That's only for CP. I would not add glitter to soap. It's too scratchy. I would use soap safe mica instead.

Since I do add additional oils to my M&P, I add a minimum of 1 TBSP per pound of Dr. Bronner's unscented liquid soap to my base to increase my lather. This has really worked well for me.
