I'm new to soap making and have questions about palm oil. I have read that some people use it others hate it. My question is can you substitute other oils? I can't find it locally but can find Red Palm oil is it the same thing? I like experimenting with different recipes but am trying to use oils that are available as I am only making small batches till I find a few favorites. I hope you can help.

Thanks

Red Palm is the same but will make your soap orange. Try checking local health food stores and natural supermarkets, and see if they carry Spectrum brand vegetable shortening. That's palm oil.

Thanks. I'm sure I've seen it in my health food store.

If you don't mind animal fats, you can also substitute lard or tallow for palm oil. Some soapers call palm "veggie tallow." Both make for a lovely, HARD soap.
