The Royal Blue did okay for me but it did definitely look disgusting and green gray to start with. I was really pleased that it looked better after a full gel phase and sitting for 4 days. This is the a similar recipe to what you did - and I picked yellow-ing oils (Karmic Goodness and Patchouli).

Top layer is Royal Blue and the bottom layer is Sky Blue. The recipe I did is here: http://twitpic.com/hqd4w

Here is the soap color corrected for what I was looking at in my hand versus what I saw on the monitor:

Here is the soap color completely not corrected (notice it's still flipped upside down!) but I wanted to include it so you could see the original:

Thanks Anne-Marie, that is DEFINITELY not what I got.

2 questions. .

1. You changed the dilution for 8 oz to 4 oz water for the small bottle of color. Do you think that made the biggest difference? Obviously you used less, but wouldn't 1 tsp of the 4 oz equal 1 tbls of the 8 oz dilution?
2. I use a lot of olive pomance. Given you got such a strong color using a lighter oil, sunflower, what would you expect the result to be with pomace?

Thanks in advance!

Lisa

I don't mind doing another test batch at all; I love making soap and making soamaking easier for peeps is my job. I'll make another batch with the Pomace. To not confuse myself or anyone, I'll do the 10 ml into 8 oz. dilution. And, I'll do a different blue for the bottom this time.

To answer your question though, my usage rate to get the bright, brilliant blue was 2 Tsp of diluted color per finished pound (oils/lye/water) of soap. And you can see, my color is a bit too strong. I will tone it down next time. =)

The Sunflower is a less green than Pomace. I tried to compensate by using Patchouli & Karmic Goodness essential oils/blends (http://www.brambleberry.com/Original-C23.aspx). That made it super yellow but not so much on the greeny side.

I'll pick up some new Pomace and make the soap Thursday. Lucky me, I am traveling Tuesday/Wed for business. I'll keep you posted on the Pomace batch ...

And in the meantime, if anyone else attempts it, let me know. I have one person that emailed me photos of her Royal Blue and they were stunning.

'Tis a mystery ...

Anne Marie,

Oh, please do not go to the trouble of getting pomace! I feel bad! Just wondering what you thought might happen with pomace vs. grade A. I just don't know alot about the colors of oils in finished soap but I am assuming that sunflower gives a lighter whiter soap than pomace?

Thanks for going to all the trouble! We all appreciate your product testing! I just think I am not the "blue" kind of gal!

I love to make soap and use any excuse I can to make it. I got green green olive oil tonight so I can test on Thursday. I'll keep you posted - and I'll do the 8 oz. dilution rate.

:D

You Rock, Anne-Marie. Love that you still find any excuse possible to make soap! I can't imagine how much fun it would be if you had every single lab color and pigment and fragrance at your fingertips to just play!

Thanks again for doing so much research. . . it really says a lot about who you are and about how you want to know your products. . . .we still have that lingering issue of the royal blue in GM powder if you have any thoughts about colors with GM. . .I think a lot of us have issues coloring GM and haven't found the perfect way to do it yet!

Made the soap today - I did a super fun two colored Blue on Blue layered soap. And I kept copious notes. And, just to see if Gel Phase made a difference, I did mini tiny soaps at a low temp to see if those soaps also turn blue.

5 hours after the soap is made, it's finally hitting gel phase in the 2 pound batch (took a while) and it's going puple in the middle.

It was an UGLY green gray to start. And, this time, I even got one of the gals in the office to come document the disgusting colors.

At the rate I'm going, I might have a real deal blog post!! =)

The theme of this blog post is:

Gel Phase Matters

(A Lot)

I've got lots of photos to show you. They are all taken with my iPhone and a bit grainy so I am sorry about that. First things first, usage rate was:

2 TBS diluted Royal Blue Labcolor (10 ml. Labcolor diluted in 8 ounces of water) per 16 ounces of soap soap (oil/water/lye total). I would never go this high again given the absolute brightness of these colors. They are practically black! I did a recipe with over 80% olive oil. It was GREEN when it started.

Photo 1: Notice the 'halo' of light blue where the soap did not gel (photo is here: http://twitpic.com/i6zzp):

Image

Photo 2: This is from the top. Again, notice the green halo from gel phase versus not. It is truly gray green blah where it did not gel.

Image

Photo 3: From the side, again you can see the gel phase really changing color:

Image

Photo 4: The two little guys I pulled aside to make sure they didn't gel. Check out what they did!

Ah ha! So I only used 1 tbls per pound soap (4 tbls total in a 58 ounces actually) and CPOP'd it BUT I am not totally sure I got a full gell; therefore, mystery solved! Thanks Anne-Marie for trying it out yourself. I feel more confident giving it a whirl again!

Thanks,

Lisa

And, just to close the loop - the weekend did not make a difference. The little soaps that did not gel are still an icky green color. I'll keep you posted if they change ...

HELPPP!!! Couldn't wait to try labcolor for the first time. I'd ordered the "lovely" Oceana, 10 ml liquid, got out my melted MP, put a drop in, looked grey... added more, and more and more........ it just got a darker grey! Now what? It's sitting in their waiting for this new creation to start taking place  Do I put this whole bottle of color in and then expect something nice, or am I wasting my soap? Frustrating...

Are you doing it in clear or white melt and pour soap?

I'll go pull a bottle from the shelf and see how it goes. Typically, Labcolors are totally stable in melt and pour. It's in CP that they give a bit of work-through.

I used the ultra clear MP soap. I'll take a photograph tomorrow and post it, if I have time. It really looked more like I was using my black oxide (in liq. glycerin) when I started dropping it in. I went ahead and worked with it. It came to be a dark, transparent green after using quite a bit more of the color. I used that dark color in sheets, put inside of what I thought was going to be a lighter, bluer version for the transparency. I mixed a few drops of blue dye with the green, as I had expected it to be more blue than green. When I cut the soap, it was grey - not green, not blue.. gray. Although not the colors I planned when I began, or even expected when I poured it, the soap turned out very nice. This is what I LOVE about MP, and the type soaps I do. Most of the time, the soaps I least expect to like, are my favorites when I cut into them. I just get so proud of myself when I cut my soaps, as they are always better than expected. :)

BTW, when I got my order, I had forgotten that I had ordered this color. The only thing on the label was the word, Oceana. I thought... could this be a fragrance sample? I couldn't smell anything, so I put it on my finger! HA! BIG BLACK STAIN. After a lot of washing, the black turned a turqoise-ish blue color and a light came on! This is a color!! HA! What an idiot. I did, however, remember the color change when I was having the gray problem, so thought it would change to that color when mixed with something else.
