I have a silly EO question -- is all EO safe for using in soap? Obviously FO's are a different story, but I have an "emergency" order I need to fill and I may go to a local place to get my EO to make the soap this weekend (if the prices aren't ridiculous). I would like to make soap this weekend rather than wait for my order from BB to get here on Thursday (one disadvantage from living on the east coast!). So if I pop into a store that sells EO's can I assume any EO will work (I'm just buying lavender) or is there something specific I should be looking for?

Thanks!

I am no expert but I often find myself in the same pickle (not selling but HAVE TO make this kind or that kind of soap) and have to go to a local health food store, Whole Foods. The most inexpensive brand is Now and it comes in a 1 oz bottle for about $5.99 for lavender. Its pretty strong but personally, I have liked all the batches I made with it. I also cut it sometimes with Rosemary EO or something else since it is sto strong by itself.

i have used many different eo's in the cold process soaps and find i have no problems with them.. lavender actually is cool because the more purer of eo you get the more awesome the scent is coming out i have found out.. i think you will be fine as far as lavender is concerned..

You can use the ones from the health food store, but be prepared for the sticker shock.

Lavender should not be a problem. However other EO's may or may not be safe for soap. Every one is different and needs to be researched before being used. There are some EO's that you should not use if you are pregnant, others if you have high blood pressure, etc. So in general, no, not all EO's are safe all the time.

However, like I said, Lavender is fine. I think it is pretty much safe for everyone.

I assume you would use less EO than FO in soap. Any suggestions as to where to start per pound?

That could get really pricey. When I made my lavender soap last night, I just added some EO to the FO, for the healing element the EO contributes.

What happens if you use too much eo? i made a batch the other day with peppermint eo and chocolate fo. I also used TD for the first time. My soap is super soft even after 4 days now. It smells wonderful but I don't really know what to do with it.
