You should be getting good intense colors with that amount. I will say that my milk soaps that gel always go tan, and purple is a hard one to get right - I've never made a milk soap that was purple. I think you'd have to follow soapbuddy's method to avoid gel to accomplish this.

I only make goatsmilk soaps. The only time I get brown is when the fo causes it. You haven't mentioned your fragrance oils--- just curious to see if that's why you are getting brown. I can keep my soaps creamy white with a non discoloring fo. I always test the first batch and see if it cures out white. I can then go ahead and color the next batches of that fo. To me it's a waste of time and ingredients to attempt to color a soap that will turn brown anyway. ( ask me how many times I've tried!!)

That's a good question, so here are the FOs I used:

Cocoa Powder as coloring--brown sugar & fig (thats why I used cocoa!)--brown soap
Purple--Lavender EO and lavender FO and titanium dix in lye water--tan color
Blue--Kai FO--tan color
Brick Oxide--cranberry citrus--brick color
Orange--grapefruit FO with grapefruit EO with 1 tsp orris root--tan soap

So, pretty much across the board. And I need to say, I am not opposed to tan but wish I could grasp the secret here!

One other note--recipe has a high percentage of olive pomace, as well as palm, coconut, shea and sunflower or almond or avocado.

Second, as Spotted Cat mentioned, I use the powder and mix with my oils to a thin paste and add that in at trace. And the powder is the plain old one sold at every health food store.

Orris root will not make your soap orange. You also risk a chance of sensitization issues with it.
If you want orange, you can try carrot puree or unrefined palm oil (in a very small amount).
For purple, I would use FD&C Blue #1 as it changes to purple in CP soap. Do not gel and you should have purple soap. If any of your oils have a vanilla content larger than 2%, those soaps usually turn tan.

Oh, I am sorry, forgot to add I used 2 tsp vibrant orange with the orange soap. I know about the sensitivity issue with orris root but these puppies are all for me, so I wasn't worried about my own skin issues.

Thanks so much Soapbuddy!
