Teach Soap

i made a batch of soap and it was to set for 18-24 hours in the mold, which i did. but it was so dry , it was cracked on top. when doinn soap, do you measure ingredients by wt. or by volume? this was my first batch.

Always measure your ingredients by weight, not by volume. Where did you get your base?

Had you wrapped the top of the mould whilst it was setting?

As Soapbuddy says, always by weight - digital scales are your friend.

another possiblity may be that you over heated the soap. make sure you only heat it enough so that everything is fully melted, and watch the soap so it doesn't boil.

thanks everybody. that helps. it is a cold-process soap with lye. 12oz.coconut,18.5oz.canola,13oz. olive oi.6.1oz. lye,12oz. distilled h2o, about 1.5 oz fragrance. what woud you use for colors in this?

With that much canola, this soap will be soft for a while. I would either up your % of olive, or add shea or mango butter instead of some of the canola. I would soap this batch at around 110 degrees. If your soap has a crack on the top it was probably soaped at a higher temp and overheated.

Canola Oil 18.5oz. 42.53%
Coconut Oil 12oz. 27.59%
Olive Oil 13oz. 29.89%
Total Weight 43.5 ozs.

thank you!! i have seen someone else's soap with this recipe and it is beautiful, so i think i got the measurements wrong. will give it another try.....
