Hello,

I am going to be selling some soaps and lotions at farmers markets and such and am looking for articles that talk about the chemical ingredients in typical store lotions and soaps. I want to educate myself about that so I can explain some differences. I personally know that my CP soap and natural lotions is more moisturizing and healing, but I want to academically know why. Do you know of any articles, books or could point me in the right direction to find such information?

Thanks guys!

I don't know of a resource for you, but will pass on my experience that has helped with selling.

For years, I had horribly dry skin on my legs, especially during the winter. They itched, and even had a few sores develop. When I started using MP soap, there was a dramatic change, and I've never had dry skin since. That was years ago, and I'm still using it.

When I was a young teen (over 50 years ago!), the "ultimate" thing to use to clean your face was a bar of soap made by Neutragena. It was pure glycerin. Thankfully, we treasured those bars and kept them in a plastic soap dish. It's ironic that something that was am important thing to me so long ago, still is. :)

Next time you're at the store, pick up a bottle of inexpensive lotion and see what the ingredients are. Then go online and look up those ingredients.

Be very careful with using the term "healing" - that's getting out on thin ice with FDA regs.

I'd also say that more than the other stuff in the stores, you should know your own stuff very very well - I always found that customers responded better when I was using positive chatter, about how my stuff was good, instead of negative - how other products were bad. To a lot of people, that's a big turn-off.

In years of weekly markets, I don't think I talked about store-bought soaps more than a handful of times, and it was always because the customer asked my opinion. Even then, I stayed as neutral as I possibly could.

If you baked a fabulous homemade dessert for a bake sale, you wouldn't start comparing it to Twinkies, right? This is the same thing. :)

i do farmers markets all the time and i can tell you from experience all they care about is the scents and how useful and the price lol... i get a ton of request for scentfree soaps and stuff(then again the customer base i have developed are allergy and asthma sufferers) but people usually come up ask if its vegan, or have any goats milk, or they just start sniffing.. anything with writing on it or booklets usually has turned people away from our stand.. hope this helps!

I do 2 farmers markets a week and folks don't care what the other guy is doing or that the soap they buy from the supermarket is lousy for their skin. They want to smell each sample and buy something pretty. Even the organic/vegetarian/vegan/natural angle is wasted on most people. I love doing the markets but it brings out the shallow in most everyone.....so sad.......
