I know I'm getting a head of myself, but I can't stop thinking about what I will call my business someday in the future. I asked this on another forum so if you read it there too, sorry  Just trying to get ideas from all the great soapers out there

I love anything to do with outdoors. I also thought about trying to come up with something kinda girly. I'm at a loss. So I come to you asking for help :)

Thanks,

Necia

I just thought of words that I liked (and that said something about the product and me) and then played around with them.... It was fun and easy to do. I'm run another forum of close friends and we all had a game of word play!

Wow - good question. Likey Honey here's my story...

I first had a name with the word 'cute' in it. I sent the name out to a small group of people of which one individual had an expertise in marketing. The feedback from the marketing friend was quite useful as she wasn't fond of the word 'cute' for a variety of reasons that all were respectful.

Back to the drawing board - I then asked this small group of selected individuals to send me a list of adjectives that came to mind with regards to my soaps. They've all gotten plenty of various designs as presents.

With those adjectives and some melt/pour articles I had - I played with all the words as well and then it came to me - "A Slice of Delight". For the most part I enjoy loaf molds and 'slicing' the soaps. And I really felt like my soaps 'personality' is meant to 'delight'. I wanted also to instill in someone that they need to 'treat themselves' and a slice of whatever my soap creation and scent would certainly do that.

I have some cavity molds that don't involve any slicing but that's okay - even when it is a bar - the message the soap conveys is still about 'making you feel good'.

It's true - one might think about pie and that was brought up but at the end of the day if I love what I'm doing and make soap people enjoy using or giving as gifts - one day people will only think of soap (that maybe smells like pie - tee hee) when that name is used.

Once I had thought of the name - I went to see if it was registered in my town to get the business license (which it wasnt') - I then quickly bought the .com and .net names for future use - only for the year for now but will repurchase to keep it owned by me, registered on twitter and on etsy and artfire with that name. I have also checked the trademark office and it does not appear to be used unless it is in process (so I'm working that angle with a lawyer friend). And someone already got the blog name but I registered with something that would still work - since I'm not blogging yet I don't want to post it. I do have a facebook account for asliceofdelight - but I'm not 100% sure I've done that right.

The key as well IF it's possible is to check all those sources and if a name isn't taken - then get it reserved if you feel it will help. I think the key for me was having already crafted soap and knowing what motivated me with my style/personality - helped alot.

IF I were to extend the line out to bath salts and bath fizzies - I still think A Slice of Delight is okay because my products would be all about that 'slice' of time where you are treating yourself.

I hope that gives you some additional ideas/thoughts.
All my best
Hilary

Hilary - I love your company name and I can totally see where it came from and it's so apt for your soaps as well.

I love doing the whole naming thing, I'm pretty good at it (I think) .. I love the wordplay stuff.

I won't post my name as yet as I'm not up and running ... I do have a blogspot though but want to get a Facebook and Twitter account first. I have bought the .com already - well my bro did, as an early birthday present. Now I'm in the process of deciding what company to use for my website.

Play around with any words you like - be creative and don't stop yourself from writing down any words that pop into your head.. you can cut some out afterwards if you like.

Honey - thanks for your vote ! Can't wait to have you unveil yours when you are ready. On that note with word play I found an old piece of paper where I had a brainstorming session with my twin boys and I thought I would share the list -- I never checked any of these out (for soap company names or anything else for that matter) as they never resonated with me but maybe someone actually does have it out there in our big vast world....

Soaparoo
Soaprano
Crazy for Soap
Someday Soap
Sunday Soap
We Love Soap
Cozy Soap
Savon
Lavage Savage (which in french I guess would translate to something like "wild washing"
Clean As a Whistle (actually I did look this up on the trademark website and I think its a cleaning company)
Soap as a Whistle
Saopisus
Soapis...
Soapalicsious (I did kind of find this cute)
Soap it out of here

I hope you all enjoyed that.
My best
Hilary

I don't sell soap at this point but I did have my own business ( actually 2 of them) for a number of years. My suggestions are to pick a name that not only fits the product, but that's easy to remember and easy to spell.

Lavage Savage, for example, is a great sounding name, but once people throw away the soap wrapper from the soap they got at a craft show or farmer's market and start looking on the Internet to order, how many Americans won't remember how to spell it?

Personal turn-offs for me in names are things like oh.. Jenny's Soap, Barb's soap, Deedee's Natural Soap etc. They don't hold my interest long enough to even look at the soap. IMO, they're too plain and don't "showcase" the soap with a name. Asliceofdelight does. It's a name that sticks, too. It's easy to remember.

"Someday Soap" sounds like a soap I might buy...someday. Not today. It's subliminal but it's there. So, okay, I'll wait to buy it.

Also, an Internet techie advised me that when buying a domain name to spend the extra $10.00 to buy the plural or singular of it. For example if your business name is HoneyBearSoap, spring for the domain name for HoneyBearSoaps too so that someone else doesn't use it in hopes of redirecting some of your business to them.

A few thoughts.

Ok, so I decided on a name. I went to Godaddy.com and it isn't registered. I'm going to go with .com, but it suggested to also get .net, .biz, and .org to name a few so that other people can't register those names and be really close to my website name. Have any of you registered the other endings too?

mine was named after my daughter katie. she was a preemie and only weighed 4 lbs at birth and we had soooo many issues with her skin.. at first i started using just eo's ( i have studied herbs for around 20 years now) then i figured why not infuse them into the soap i use on her?? and thats how i started... we have a bar i hold very close to my heart called the make my skin clear bar, that i sell around 40 bars of a week, and sometimes more... i am constantly curing thos bars lol anyways thats a little about me, and my little business that started cause of my daughter katie... katiebugs handmade body products!! lol
