I would like to put a preservative in some of my scrubs to protect against water contamination. Are there any preservatives that are paraben free that can be used in products that don't contain water?

I believe Optiphen is a paraben-free preservative

Can someone co-sign on this?

What about Garbin or how ever its is spelled and how much do you put in (of the preservetive)?

This is just a general rule of thumb! Before you use any preservative you should first learn all you can about it.

You need to know things like how hot your mixture can be when you add your preservative. They aren't all the same.

You also need to learn how much of each preservative you should use. Again they aren't all alike.

I just thought you might like an "at a glance" kinda chart. This is something I copied some time back that Lab Rat posted:

If your formula contains only oils, butters and waxes and does not contain water but there is a possibility that the consumer could introduce water into the product, you can use:

Euxyl PE 9010
Uniphen P-23
Phenonip
LiquaPar PE
LiquaPar Optima
LiquaPar Oil
Optiphen

Whether or not any of these would be ideal for you; only you will know that.

Thank you all! I knew of Optiphen but had heard it causes problems in certain formulas, but I haven't experimented yet, so I don't know which ones I will look more into the Euxyl PE. That might be another option too. Thanks again!

Optiphen makes my lotion formula curdle, but I haven't used it in a scrub.

I've used Optiphen in scrubs with good results - but you need to test in your own formula to be sure. I've never tried it in an emulsion - thanks for the heads up on curdling! I'll have to test it, just for grins.
