Hi all! This is my first post, so please forgive me if I sound ignorant  Can anyone tell me if you can make a liquid hand soap using a melt and pour base? I make lotions and other body products, but have not attempted my own soaps yet. I am hoping to make some liquid soaps with scents that match some of my hand lotions. And eventually get into making bar soaps. Thanks in advance for any advice! :D

No, not from melt n' pour. Take a look at BrambleBerry's liquid soap base. That's where I would go.

Thanks for the tip. I am looking into the base. I think I will order some this weekend. Just curious though, why can't you use melt and pour soap? Or bits of left over CP soap? I have seen some recipes for liquid soap with these I thought? Also, do you need to add a preservative to the base or any other liquid soap you make?

The more water you add, the less bubbles it will make. If you make your own liquid soap from scratch, I would recommend a preservative.

Yeah ,I thought I had conquered the M&P liquid soap experiment. i think if i worked on it ALOT I could come up with a decent non snotty formula ,but it's really not worth the time when ther are so many alternatives. The next best thing I have found without makeing liquid soap from scratch useing LYE is that i found a goatsmilk soap paste from ORGANIC CREATIONS which you reconstitute and make into liquid soap. :)

Thanks for the tip Carolyn. I have looked at that base. I'm not really sure if I want something you have to add Borax to though. Has your experience been good with this soap? Also, it does not say anything about adding a preservative. Wouldn't you need a preservative if you are adding distilled water to it?

For the safety of your customers it is recommended that you add a preservative, unless you are using a premade base as is.

I agree with Soapbuddy - any time you use water, you need a preservative. I would use one just to be on the safe side. Legally you'd be responsible if anything happened to a customer and, if it were me, I'd not be taking a chance.

Also, if you sell to the EU, you should note that the use of Borax is banned for cosmetics (which includes liquid soap).

I have decided to go with a preservative. i will use Cosmoquil cq as at least it'paraben free. I feel like I kind of got ripped off from this company.they have been in buisness for years so I really don't understand the logic behind no preservative. What's up with the borax being banned in EU? I'm not selling in EU but would like to no why it's banned there and not in the US?

Not sure to be honest, I read it on another forum (there were quite a few posts about it) and a certified chemist agreed that it was banned. EU legistation on cosmetics is pretty stringent.

I know it's annoying to have to add something even if they say there's no need but it's really better to be safe, just in case.
