Hi All,

I made a batch of Plain soap. Soaped @ 101 oils & 107 Lye. Poured into mold, placed in oven @ 170 degrees for 1 hr 15 min.

Does anyone know what caused this to happen to the top of my soap? I haven't cut into the log yet & don't know if it has gone all the way through the batch.

Thanks!

I just cut into the log. There is no apparent problems below the surface, so I'll wait for it to cure and shave off the top. Doesn't seem to be a problem with the bar.

That is very unusual for sure . Did you have saran on it , that might have slipped down and the condensation made it look like that ?

unscented, uncolored, no saran wrap on top. I have a lid for the mold that I place on top, so nothing was touching the soap

Hi Spotted, Your soap looks really nice. I've also had up and down experiences with CPOP. I had one where it really buckled, and I call it my Buckle Bar. Others have been fine. Blackjack's soap was one of my CPOPs. I'll try to post the Buckler, but I seem to be unsuccessful today with posting pics. Thought I had it down, but maybe something changed that I haven't kept up with. [img][/img] Anyway, your soap looks easy to remedy and is lovely.

Could it be that the batter "puffed" from the heat, then collapsed? I can only imagine that it would work like that with full water, or nearly full. If you discount the water it seems, you'd have cracking from heating puffy batter, kwim?

I could be from the batter puffing up, then settling down. There is no zap - so I'm using it, lol.

Overheating does that. If your mold is retaining a lot of heat it will "wrinkle" the edges. One of my log molds does this - thicker wood used to make it. It's also easier to get this effect in hot weather - my guess is that the oven stays hotter, longer. You might turn the oven off after 30 minutes during warm months. Or preheat it and then turn the oven off as you put the soap in.

I do it on purpose for a couple of bars - the colorants used can cause some sections to overheat more than others, so I can get some pretty interesting effects. For this bar, you can kind of see the effect - it wrinkles where I'm using the colorant (bb bordeaux mica) but not where it isn't. (best example is the bottom bar of the stack.)

This one has colorant (purple ultramarine pigment) in a layer over the top of the base soap, and the whole thing gets crinkled:

The soap will still be just fine.

Thanks magic. I actually love the way those turned out on your soap. Gives it lots of character!
