Hi all... I'm very interested in making my own lotions but I note that many recipes called for distilled water. Is tap water ok to use? If not, can I use mineral water? I don't know where I could buy distilled water to be honest. Any help would be appreciated.

Distilled water is really the best. Tap water usually has impurities that you would not want in the final product.

Thanks - I did a Google search and I believe chemists sell it at 5litres a time but not too expensively. Looks like I'll be making a ton of lotions!

Would mineral water have similar impurities do you think?

Yep I second that! Distilled water all the way! Tap can do nasty things and so can mineral water! The few times I did not have distilled water on hand I boiled down tap water for a good while. But then a few bottles went rancid, so I will never be doing that again!

I realize most people live in cities, which is why you wouldn't want to use tap water. (chlorine and floride being the 1st two chemicals off the top of my head that is added to city water) But I live in the country. We have our own water system, with no added chemicals. Would this be a problem? (as the closest store is a good hour away, and I really, really want to make some lotion, lol!)

You can buy distilled water at your local grocery store, but it is generally cheaper at walmart. I think I only pay about 32 cents for a gallon. Also, check your local pet store! Some pet stores sell distilled or reverse osmosis distilled water for aquariums. I use this for my salt water fish tank, and it comes in handy for my B&B products. :)

So does that mean you have well water? And you don't add anything to it? No disinfection products, no softeners?

Maybe you can try running your water through a Brita or Pur filtration system. This will remove many impurities. Or stock up on DI during your next trip to wally world next month! :)

We have spring water, with nothing added to it at all.

Peggi, I would boil your water and try a small batch for yourself & watch it to see what it does.

Well water could be heavy with minerals and trace elements. I would still stick with distilled water.
