Addition to the list:

I use Optiphen Plus in my lotions, and it works great. No yeast, mold, or bacteria present. I like it because it is paraben free and has a pleasant smell. No weird feel, either.

Products can be "organic based" if they use organic ingredients with preservatives. I would run if it said 100% natural and organic and it was a lotion or a cream. Those would have germs, mold or bacteria within a couple of days.

If it's a lotion bar or a sugar scrub with no water, just oils, then no preservatives are needed.

I have tried many so called "natural" preservatives and none of them so far passed the challenge test.

Mine use some organic ingredients and are paraben and formaldehyde free.

Well..regarding how much you use each preservative is different..You go by what it says on the bottle..like I have liquid germ which is for as someone mentioned mixes with oil/water etc, it says use I think 1%-3% or around there. So..do not EVER use more than it says..or you may end up with a nasty rash. Also if you make let's say whipped shea butter obviously without any water..it may last up to a month depending on the oils used.

Also take into account that some oils have longer SHELF life than others... The preservative shelf life obviously varies and also including whatever oils you used..I think it was lotion crafter that estimated 6 months to a year with a perservative.
Also you can look at lotion crafter...they have quite a bit of information...

Also make sure you follow the instructions regarding usage of preservative exactly as it says and NEVER exceed the temperature on the bottle..or it will be useless.
Make sure you read on when to put it in also.

Ok, so if I were to make the following scrub, what would you recommend?

2 cups of granulated sugar
1 cup of table salt
1.5 cups of coconut oil

Thanks,
zeo

If your formula contains only oils, butters and waxes and does not contain water but there is a possibility that the consumer could introduce water into the product, you can use:

Uniphen P-23
Phenonip
LiquaPar PE
LiquaPar Optima
LiquaPar Oil

You can also use Optiphen. Usage rate is 0.5 - 1.5%.

Ok, thanks Soapbuddy! That's what I'll do. I was kinda wanting to use that one in case I dabble with other products since this one is known to be good for a wide range of PH levels.

Happy 4th of July!
