Teach Soap

Okay, so I was visiting a friend today and she makes candles. She got a sample FO from a company (not Brambleberry) and she wanted me to make some soap for her. I said I would. I made a 1# batch. I used a simple recipe. I reached trace. Added color. Then I added the FO and it went very liquid on me. I aggressively used my stick blender for about 10 minutes trying to mix this stuff into the batch. Anyway, I finally reached what I thought might be a light trace again, poured it into the mold. Now it's in the oven for an hour @ 170 degrees. Can anyone explain what happened here? Was this FO watered down perhaps? I just don't know.......

The FO might have been made for candles only. I would check to see if it's skin and soap safe.

yes, i checked the website and it is skin safe, so i figured it was okay to use

Normally, an FO would not thin out your soap so much that it would take 10 minutes more with your stick blender. Skin safe is good; but it might not be soap safe.

well darn. I guess I'll check it out tomorrow. I will put in an order with Brambleberry for the Moonlight Pomegranate.

I'm pretty sure you will be safe with BrambleBerry.

Very True, I have never had a problem with Brambleberry. Their descriptions for their EO & FO are spot on.

Well I pulled the mold out of the oven & cut it. Did the tongue test for zap, nothing, just soap. So I guess it's okay. A very faint scent however.

How much of the sample did you use for this 1 lb. batch?

I haven't touched my tongue to a piece of soap for years, but what I did was I wet one finger, rubbed it across the soap, then lightly touched the finger my tongue. If it zaps like a 9 volt battery, that means there's free lye in the soap that did not saponify. In that case you might need to rebatch. If you don't know what a 9 volt battery feels like, try it sometime. It's not harmful, but you will feel the zap from it.
