Teach Soap

Hello!
I'm making my hubby a shaving kit for Father's Day- shaving soap in a mug, shaving brush,
razor, etc. I wanted to make him an aftershave but don't know if I am doing it right. Here is
what I was planning on doing:

70% witch hazel
30% aloe vera juice

As a preservative I have germaben II & Phenonip (which I have never gotten around to using)

Does this sound okay?
Can I use a FO with this?

This is all last minute because I wasn't aware that Fathers Day was this Sunday!!

Witch hazel has alcohol. Since you are using it at 70%, I would think it would be ok without an extra preservative. If you add FO, you will need an emulsifier like a polysorbate. You need that so all of it will stay mixed.

I made it with 60% aloe vera juice & 40% witch hazel. I didn't know about the polysorbate. At what percentage
would I add this- for the next time?

I added some Germaben to it. My first time using it. Was a bit hard to measure I think
my scale has gone hay wire. It refuses to measure anything below 0.10 oz.

It is hard to measure if you don't have a scale that weighs such a small amount. I would be careful with that after shave. If it starts to irritate, you could have too much of the preservative in it. It's normally used at 0.3 - 1%.

I'll have him try it tomorrow and if it irritates him I'll toss it.
I'll make him one with about 70% witch hazel so I can omit the preservative.
I need a scale that weighs smaller amounts!

See if you can find a jeweler's scale. That should help you weigh small amounts. Otherwise Jen at Lotioncrafter.com carries it as well as the very lightweight weigh boats.

Jennings JS-50X scale is any good?

My hubby used the shaving kit I made for him last night & he loved it!
He is the aftershave was very refreshing and didn't sting at all!
I have to buy some polysorbate for the next batch I make for him.
