For those of you that have made 100% Castile Soap w/o adding other oils, do you heat the Olive Oil before adding the Lye water? I did a search on this forum first before asking the question and did not see that as a topic for discussion.

Or would be easier to add an oil to help harden the soap?

Just curious.

I heat it to about 110 and the lye water is at the same temp. If you attempt to make castille soap at room temp, it will take forever to trace, unless you do a steep water discount.

Thanks for the info soapbuddy. I was thinking about discounting the water as well. At least I know I was going in the right direction. :P

Soap Buddy -
I made a match of castile soap quite a while back. Doesn't it require a longer cure time (to fully harden). I let mine cure for over 16 weeks. It was an "OK" soap, but felt a bit slimey. It wasn't one of my favorite batches...

GEEZE - just noticed my typo! I meant to say "batch" of soap not "match" of soap!

But, it's good to know that the slimey-ness was not something I caused. I have an American Castile recipe (with a few other ingredients). Maybe I'll give it a try.

Try a 90% olive and 10% castor for more bubbles. :)

I love Castille & it is one of my most popular soaps that I sell. I make it with a 5% Superfat & 5% water discount so it cures a little faster. I don't colour or scent this one....

I just tried my first castille batch.
It's been curing for 4 weeks now and it's slimey and goey.
I know I have to wait at least 6 months for it to get better.
What I'm wondering is, after 6 months or a year, does it still feel slimey? Does it still get that goey gel when used? How long does a castille bar last?

I have a 2 year old castille under the sink. It's still slimey. If I didn't use it, I would have given it away. I need bubbles.

I made a modified castile with olive oil, cocoa butter, castor oil and bees wax. I do not feel a slimyness to this at all. The lather is more of a fluffy creamy lather than bubbles.
