When layering to get two different colors, do you pour sooner? Say like at light or medium trace?

No, not sooner because they would mix. You need the bottom layer thick enough so it would support the layer on top. If need be, pour the top layer over a spoon so as not the disturb the layer underneath.

I always force gel on the entire batch, after pouring the last layer - for me, the layers that gel together, stay together. I know soapbuddy prefers not to gel her soaps, so I assume she has a different technique. :)

ok - gel = heat; heat = layers sticking together. or is it more like the chemical reaction during gel that makes the soap molecules stick together?

I'm interested in layering with C/P, but am not sure how soon to pour the 2nd layer. How soon after the 1st layer?

As far as forcing the layered batch to gel, will the 1st layer gel properly? Do you keep it warm/insulated until you're ready to pour the 2nd layer?

Has anyone tried "chunk" soaps with C/P (e.g., cutting a 24-hour old batch into chunks, placing them in a mold and then pouring a new batch over the chunks). I saw a recipe and instructions in a book, but have been reluctant to try it.

I put the mold in the oven after I pour the final layer - but I always use that method. :) The whole batch gels.

Same thing with chunks. Those work well, too.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

I guess what I'm worried about is the second layer setting up before I can pour it onto the first layer.

If you're worried that the soap might thicken up too fast, don't use a stick blender. Mix by hand using a whisk instead. Pour at a light trace.
