Sooo.. I really like my SFIC base - great ingredients, no SLS, etc.
BUT, it just doesn't have that crystal clear look that I really need. It is slightly yellowish, even after I add a tad of ultramarine to neutralize it.

I have searched for other, but bases that get rave reviews for clarity don't seem to have as good of ingredients

Looks like I might have to compromise quality for clarity, unless someone knows of a base that would fit my needs: be exceptionally clear and SLS free.

Is there one out there?

I don't know of one that has good ingredients AND is clear. You get one or the other.

I have seen people add just a touch of ultramarine blue to the soaps. This gives it a more clear glass type appearance. PJ does this I believe and hers come out great. You can see some have more blue added than others.

I have been adding blue to mine. It is still not completely clear. I guess it would have been fine if I was placing imbeds inside of the soap, but I am using water soluble color prints, and correct color is very important to me.

Okay - I see that in your first post, sorry I missed that.

I have also noticed that the more 'natural' a soap base is the less clarity it has.

Have you tried embedding the picture closer to the top of the soap, so that there is just a thin layer of soap over it? Rather than in the middle or bottom of the bar, where there would be a thicker layer to look through?

Ultramarine Blue is a powder, right? Not a liquid pigment?

I definitely have this problem, too. Even when I use the SFIC as a really thin layer, its yellowness seems to deepen with age, making the soap look even worse over time.

I just keep a stash of the ultra clear on hand and use sparingly. Then 90% of my soaps are SLS free (all of my soapsicles are SLS free, though, FYI).

I wonder how my labeling would be then? If I use 10% of the base that contains SLS and 90% that doesn't, I can no longer claim SLS free?

Any ideas on the wording?

"Practically SLS free"?

Btw, Soapylove, what type of super clear base do you use?

As far as labeling goes, I can't advise you on that. But I usually buy my super clear from Life of the Party with a Michael's coupon. I think I bought the last block of Stephenson's Extra Clear that Bramble Berry had!

Soapylove,
How is Michaels base compared to Stephenson quality/ingredients wise?
I know Michaels ends up being very expensive - 10$ for 2 pound tray....

I have a feeling it might be the same exact soap base, but under a different label. I had a 50% off coupon so I got 2# for $5 today. I was happy since I had it immediately!
