How important is insurance? I have been reading, reading, and reading some more.......found the Handcrafted Soap Makers Guild and saw the insurance offered there. What do you do?

If you make under 5T per year, you can go with RLI insurance (US). It's less expensive than the Guild.

Thank you for the reply, soapbuddy Now for a dumb question or two-----is 5T five thousand? and, what is RLI insurance? I have contacted Auto-Owners Insurance to see if they will cover me. This is a new adventure for me, making soap, and I do have some stores that I will be putting soap out and have some craft fairs lined up for this summer. Also, I just wanted to be covered in case some one would get 'hurt' by using the soap I'm making.

Just wanted to add that you always have to consider the worst case scenario. Someone could get a "rash " from your soap. Someone could trip on a table leg or tent weight at your craft show.You would like to think that this would never happen, but I never thought it was worth the risk. People who sue for "miniscule" things are usually looking for a big settlement. Also, some of the requirements for craft shows require that you are insured.

Hello, I have a follow up question about this post. I am researching the idea of a soap business and I visited RLI's website listed above. I was going through the list of acceptable businesses on their page and the only category that sounded like it would include a soap business was "Personal Care Products". But then I saw that there was a 'products liability exclusion' attached to that category. I guess I'm just wondering if you guys know something that I don't, or if maybe I'm just not looking at the right category on their acceptable business listing. Does anyone have products liability insurance through RLI ? Thank you for any help.
