Hello,
Does anyone have suggestions about how to make a solid dog soap? What fragrances (if any) are good to use for flea repellant? Are there any oils or fragrances that should be avoided when making a dog soap?

Thanks,
Michele

Personally, I don't make dog soap. The pH of dogs is different then humans. Our fur babies can't tell us if a soap irritates their skin.

Try this one...hope this helps, I'll look into it and get back to you. I am in the process of formulating and researching a recipe. Mine is for my red nosed pitbull because she has sensitive skin. What kind of dog is yours? The breed is going to be a very important factor for sure.

Hello,
I have an Australian shepherd mix, a greyhound, and a border collie mix. All the dogs are short hair.

Thanks,
Michele

alright, your Australian shepherd, and border collie are going to probably be the same shampoo formulation based on the physiology. The grey hound is probably going to be a different formula only because even if they (Australian Shepherd and Border Collie) have their coats trimmed to be as short as the Greyhound, their coat is naturally a different chemistry and requires curtain things that maybe unnecessary for the Greyhound. You can tell they are similar and your Greyhound is kind of like the hair length of a pit-bull and their features are similar also, like streamline and elongated.

Anyways the oils in their skin can differ and to correctly make a homemade soap you could have to make 2 different ones to be safe. But I haven't examined fully yet so I could be mistaken. The reason you may not want to do the same formula unless research supports a uniform acceptance by all breeds, but I almost don't think it will just be one type fits-all-for every dog. Commercial dog soap is formulated for all dogs regardless of their breed so it is not discriminatory but very bad for the longevity of all of our animals and humans also because it is we who apply these dog soaps most of the time bare handed.

Seeing as how you have 3 dogs I can tell just by their breeds and the fact that you are trying to learn how to make them healthier, lets me know that you and I are alike in that I don't care if I had to make a different formulation for each of my dogs as long as I could know without a doubt it was the best formula for that specific animal. And making a soap for a creature that, like SoapBuddy had aforementioned above, hasn't got the ability to let you know, "Hey that burnt my but, I don't like that" or whatever they may say its extremely important to research every little thing and look at MSDS sheets for all oils that you consider to use and your dogs prone allergies based on breed. All these things have a small factor in a much bigger procedure. Which is collecting data, both on your dogs medical history and breed complications and finding out what oils to use in what ratio for them specifically.

Honestly to really get a good evaluation I would need to know all their specs and I just don't want to be intrusive in any way. But really its not just make a recipe once and avoid these ingredients and these additives but add this and this...im afraid to do it 100% correctly I will have to be done very methodically. But I don't know how you feel on the topic. If it is just so you don't have to buy commercial soap and aren't overly concerned with their skins ph. then I guess just make any old recipe. But if you are concerned then you will need to know EVERY LITTLE DETAIL.

My bad for being lengthy in my description, I just am giving an example of what I would do personally. I hope this helps you.

P.S. the only reason I am saying these are important aspects to research if you haven't considered them already, is mainly because of dealing with an animal who can't tell you straight up how they feel. But you will be able to tell by their reaction to the soap you use just monitor them closely for at least 14 days for signs of any kind of things that maybe weren't there before or how they act (itching, scratching redness) your a dog owner so I know you'll be able to tell just take your time.

These would be great questions for your veterinarian! You can make an ingredient list to bring in and see if they have any apprehensions to any of your ingredients. I have not made dog soap personally as I know their skin and sense of smell can be sensitive. :D

I use my liquid soap for my German Shepherd and never had any problems. For a skin safe liquid soap, humans or dogs, 100% olive oil superfatted to 3%.
