Teach Soap

Hello all! I have been making 4lb batches of CP soap for a little more than 6 months. I'm pretty new to soap making but having great success. I want to double my batches so that I can do an 8 pound batch all at one time. Can I simply double my recipe since it's not really that much soap in the end? It's not like I'm making a 20 pound batch. I appreciate your accumulative wisdom on this site!

Any time you change or double the recipe run it through a lye calculator. Most times that amounts stay the same, but sometimes it changes slightly.

If I have two separate soap molds and want each one to have exactly half of the batch by weight, how do I do that? My ingredients are carefully calculated so that I get a 4.50 oz. bar from my 4 LB mold. If I pour too much into one of the molds and not enough in the other my weights will be wonky.

Yes, I know what one batch weighs and if I double it than it seems I'm just dividing it in half visually and not exactly. I can't weight out the soap at trace by half. I'm trying to be more efficient and if I do two separate batches it kind of rules out the concept of efficiency. For soapers who sell a lot of soap I've seen videos of loaf molds that are extremely long. I guess that's one way to do it, buy or make a very long mold that holds a lot of soap by weight.

Thanks soapbuddy. I will try it. It sounds like a lot to juggle but I guess thats the difference between a very experienced soaper and me, but I want to learn so I have to be willing to try new things.

Along with everything Soapbuddy said you might think about if your soap pot, wisk, stick blender, etc. will contain a double batch of soap. I made that mistake once and it was a P.I.T.A.
