Hello, I have one last question for today. I am fairly new to soap making with only about a dozen batches made. I want to try colour so I have bought some oxides (for CP soap). I have been reading to dissolve the oxide in a carrier oil. But....I also bought Titanium Dioxide that is water soluble.
I have a recipe that calls for mixing Titanium Dioxide and some Hydrated Green Chromium Oxide in oil to make an aqua colour. That would have been easy if I bought oil soluble Titanium Dioxide.

So, my question is...can I dissolve oxide in water with the Titanium Dioxide ? I tried a small bit of it and it seemed to work but would like opinions. I only purchased small amounts of oxides to try and don't want to waste it experimenting.

PS I have a mini mixer that is recommended by Brambleberry.

Thanks !

Mix the two separately. The oxide in oil, and the TD in water. When you add them to your soap batter, it's an emulsification and they will mix then and work just fine.

I always mix up each color separately. I find that this gives me a better indication of what the color will actually look like in the finished soap. I can add more of one or another color if I need to more easily if they are kept separate.

Thanks Kelly. It had occurred to me to mix and add separately but for some reason the step of adding 1 tsp at a time to better control color escaped me. In the meantime I went ahead and ordered oil soluble TO ...LOL. Oh well, I ordered 2 molds that have also been on my wish list. Bonus !

Try mixing both in glycerin instead.

Thanks Irena. I will give it a whirl.

I was wondering if glycerin will saponify so I did a search and stumbled on a web site that said something that I am questioning. It said that the end result of saponification in CP soap making is glycerin soap. Is this correct ? Doesn't sound right to me but I could be wrong. Thanks

Interesting. So, is the glycerin in saponified CP soap the same molecular structure as the glycerin in melt and pour soap ?

How about that ! Learn something new everyday !! So, the only difference between glycerin melt and pour and saponified CP soap is the superfatting in CP ? Yes ? No ?
I am assuming the superfatting is what give CP soap more nourishing etc qualities ?

Thirsty for knowledge ! Thanks

Interesting !! I am wondering if they are both glycerin why both to go through the process of CP. I guess the extra superfatting ???

Thanks again.

(Sorry I don't know how to answer with a quote. I tried the quote "button" but it didn't seem to do what I thought it should)

I find this so fascinating !

How long can I store oxide mixed in oil ? It's nice to have extra. I had to quickly mix some up this morning and I'm just hoping my mini mixer did the job in a hurry. Looked OK but I won't find out for a day or so.
