Teach Soap

Do any of you add a small amount of cream to your soap at or before trace? I am wondering the best way to calculate it -- I have been soaping at 38% (water as % of oils). If I reduce this to 34% I would have less water to deal with and then could add, say an ounce or so of cream -- does this logic work? I am new and obsessed already - trying to get Christmas soap ideas together. Thanks all!

Just use the cream as a portion of your water amount. Use enough water to dissolve your lye (I use the amount of lye plus 1 oz of water) and add the rest as cream at trace. Example: 8 oz of water, 3 oz of lye. Use 4 oz of water to dissolve lye and add 4 oz of cream at trace. Be aware that this could cause your soap batter to move more quickly.

Be aware that adding the cream at trace will not make a difference in your superfat. Lye at trace is still very active and it will take whatever it wants. There is no guarantee that the cream will end up as your superfat.
