Hello! I am very excited to have found this community!
I am very new to soap making, and plan on pursing the cold process method to begin. I considered melt and pour for a while, but it is very appealing to me to be able to create my own recipes eventually. I’ve already read The Everything Soapmaking Book and Susan Miller Cavitch’s natural soapmaking book should be here next week. I’ve also started to collect some basic supplies, and am considering what else I should invest in, without going overboard. I really believe I will enjoy this craft, since it has always interested me, but you never know. When I was a young girl I always wanted to go to the “smelly store” (Crabtree and Evelyn) over a toy store or something more age appropriate! I don’t know why I didn’t pursue this earlier, but here I am now! Better a little later than never.
I mainly work from home (office sometimes) for an Engineering and cultural resources firm, and am married with one three year old daughter, a dog, 2 cats, 2 birds, and 1 chinchilla. This means a visit to her grandparents’ house for the little one and a safety gate to keep the free roaming animals out of the kitchen when I start soaping. They’re usually asleep somewhere, but it isn’t worth the safety hazard to not pull one of our child safety gates out of storage.
In the next year I would like to work on developing a solid recipe using small test batches. I’m grateful for the wonderful recipes available in books and on websites like Soap Queen and Teach Soap, but I’d really like to create my own formula. BUT I need to walk before I can run. After I’m happy with a base I’d like to start working with essential oil combos and some natural soap additives. The natural colorants look fascinating and infusions are intriguing to me. Maybe some milk soaps too? It will be interesting to see where this all goes.
In the long run, we’ll see. If I truly enjoy this and find that I’m creating nice soaps regularly, perhaps a small side business? That is well down the line, though. I can see where I would have a nice potential client base who would enjoy that type of handmade product. There are so many experiences and ducks to get in a row before even putting serious consideration into that!
I’m so happy to be here and can’t wait to interact with such a nice and learned group!
