I have been soaping on and off for 8 years, in that time I have acquired a lot of soapmaking stuff, fragrance oils, molds and such. I have also taken breaks several times. Many of which have been over a year. I have been reading about the shelf life of oil and I was wondering are all oils going to go rancid? I am coming back from another break, I had a daughter a little over a year ago and I just am getting back to after a break when I was pregnant and then the first year of her chaotic, wonderful life. Anyway I don't want to have replace all the oils that I have, I will throw some out I have some grapeseed oil that I figure can't be good and couple others. But I have some cocunut oil (that I have had for years, that's what happen when you buy 50 lbs of it), palm oil and others that aren't bad. I also have some that have never been opened. Is it possible to keep them?

THanks in advance

Welcome back! You might check this list from the Soap Queen that gives you an idea of the shelf life of various oils. Of course, it depends on what conditions they've been stored in whether they're still good to use, even if they haven't reached their expiration dates yet. I'm sure Irena can give you more concrete information than I can, but if you make soap with expired oils, your chances of getting DOS are going to be higher than with fresh oils.

Thanks I will look through my stuff. So far I haven't had any issues, but we are moving so and I need to downsize some, so perhaps I will get rid of some of my older stuff I have opened but never used. I have a lot of stuff I haven't opened and that seems fine....

I also took a break for years. I had a few fragrance oils that went off, and my mango butter. I used my mango butter at 10%. It did tend to cause some seizing, but the soap was fine. If you have an FO that smells weird and you don't remember it smelling weird before, trash it.
