I have a question. I'm thinking of using this as my standard recipe for cp soaping. (30/30/30/10) Coconut, olive, Palm, rice bran and then super fat 5% either with Shea butter only or shea butter and apricot kernel oil. I have made a couple batches but they are still curing. Anyone have an opinion on the oils in general? Good/bad ideas? Other oils that might be better?

But I have made another recipe that had avocado oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and olive oil (not in that order) and I liked the was it turned out, but I was suing this formulation for a facial bar. Would this be a better recipe?

Also, exactly what does Shea butter do for the soap?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks ginger

It's hard to say without the percentages of each oil and your superfat %. :D

Once your soap cures and you use it, you'll be able to determine if it works the way you want. Research the properties of each oil and formulate from there. Some oils - olive, tallow, lard, avocado, to name a few - are more conditioning than others (coconut). If you like your facial recipe better, then tweak that one until you love it.

For an idea about the specific properties of a particular oil, you can check out this .

I printed out the chart in the post and keep it with my recipes. It's not a comprehensive list, but it's a good starting point. However, the only way to know if your recipes work out is to make them. Sometimes a particular recipe works out well on paper, but you don't actually like the finished product. It's happened to me a lot of times! Keep good records of which recipe you make and how you like it, and you'll be able to refine one or more down into something you really like.

Also remember w/CP soap, there's no guarantee which oil or butter will end up being your superfat "because the lye will take whatever it wants" -quoting Irena, one of our favorite soapmaking gurus.

I know that lye is a fickle creature and eats what it wants, it's just the "extra" I put in the recipe after my lye is in. I tried a small piece of the soap in the shower the other day. I wasn't too thrilled. My skin wasn't as dry as it usually is in the winter so I guess that's a win. There were a lot of bubbles and it looked pretty.

I know, and I don't know why I wrote that I add it after I add the lye, because that's not true. (Except I literally just woke up and still not thinking straight). I add all my oils together and then add the lye. Ive made quite a few types of soap lately and my testers like them all, but I just don't "love" the soaps. Meaning I haven't found one that I like how my skin feels afterwards yet. But my testers all like every soap I've made.

Has anyone tried 100% coconut oil soaping and beer as the liquid? If so, how did that turn out? I've had quite a few of my testers say they liked my 100% coconut oil soaps. I might give that a try again.

Maybe I need to raise my superfatting %?

For 100% coconut oil soaps, I superfat at 20%. Otherwise the soap is very drying.
