Teach Soap

Hi Folks:

I ran across a recipe for an oatmeal, whey and honey soap. I liked it, but I do not know where to obtain whey. I know what it is, but not a source. (I suppose it would help if I knew a cheese maker!)

Strain some plain yogurt. Put the yogurt into cheesecloth or a coffee filter, and sit it over a catching container (like a small bowl or mason jar) in the refrigerator overnight. The liquid drippings are whey.

Bonus - the solid that is left behind is basically cream cheese. Or you can make your own cheese. It sounds scary, but it's not too bad. Mozzerella is pretty easy. You can also buy fresh mozzerella at the grocery store, and the liquid in those containers is whey. But that can get pricey.

Because I live in the city, I purchase minimally heated milk at one of the local health food stores. Not only is it delicious, it separates easily with little effort on my part. The curds are delicious with a bit of honey or can be used (because they basically are) as ricotta cheese. Your state regulations will be the biggest factor in the availability of raw or nearly so milk for you.

I don't know if it's the same or full of other ingredients but I have seen whey powder available in the muscle head section of stores near the vitamins.

What benefits did the post you read suggest the whey gave to the finished soap or were they just using it up from their own cheese making efforts? You can use goat, sheep, or cow milk in your recipe if you can't find a source but otherwise want to try the recipe.

the liquid is whey... i sometimes make paneer and use it in my salads etc
