Teach Soap

Can someone tell me the pros cons of making salt bars? I do know they should be done in individual bars, not a loaf, correct? I love the look of the few I have seen, just hoping someone could give me more info on them... benefits and so on, or, if they are really tricky to make and so on.

I have made exactly one batch of salt bars. I did 100% coconut oil, 20% superfat, 100% salt, and I added lavender eo. I've really enjoyed them. I did mine in individual molds. I would not do a mold that needed cutter, or a detailed mold, b/c once you add the salt it gets pretty thick! They did improve my skin. I used pink salt, which looks very pretty. The soap definitetly has a salty smell, which goes well with the lavender.

Cons - they melt pretty fast!

My salt bar has actually lasted pretty long, and didn't set up as fast as I thought but my one con is don't use if you have a cut or just shaved it hurts !

Do they hold certain scents better than others?

I am in love with salt bars now! I am in awe of how much more moisturizing they are. Weird. I dont think I am ready to try in a mold so pretty sure I will stick to a mini loaf pan

I have never heard of salt bars before the recent discussions about them on this forum. They sound neat, and I'd like to try making them. But I still don't quite understand - what is the point to them? What does the salt do to the soap? I have heard of people making soap with potassium hydroxide and adding salt to the soap to harden it. Does this have anything to do with the salt soaps we're talking here? Do you add the dry salt to the soap at a thin trace, or do you have to dissolve it in water first, or how exactly do you add it?

Also, when you say you use 100% salt, what does this mean exactly? What does the percentage of salt mean? Does 100% salt in a 2 lb. batch of soap mean to use 2 lb. of salt in the batch? Likewise, would 50% salt mean adding 1 lb. of salt to a 2 lb. batch of soap?

For each 1 lb. of oil I use 8 ozs. of salt.

I make my soap as usual, then after trace, I add in the salt (pink Himalayan salt) and get it in my molds FAST. I think I added 20oz per 2.5 loaf

This is not the same as adding salt to lye water, that is usually a teaspoon to help harden bars. The way above is just another type of CP that allows for amazing awesome new qualities. By far my favorite!
