What is everyone's favorite oils to make cold process soaps? I have just started to make cp soap and have used coconut oil, canola oil, olive oil and walnut oil.

Pretty much the same as Possum. I no longer use canola as it gives me DOS and walnut oil has a short shelf life.

Olive, coconut, lard and castor oil are my base. Then I will usually add a bit of a butter and sweet almond or avocado oil.
I have had a lot of fun over the past year trying many recipes but have finally narrowed it down to one basic recipe that I use. Have fun experimenting.

Thanks for all your answers! I made a shapoo and shaving soap and found that the recipe makes a smooth soap. My bars turned out so pretty. And it was my first time using palm oil/castor oil so I might just keep using palm oil. I have used olive, coconut, canola and sunflower or safflower oils. It made a pretty soap also, but it hasn't been consistent. Sometimes it seems to have lumps in it or it's smooth when poured. So I'm still looking for a true favorite recipe.

(Although, the 95% olive and 5% castor oil recipe Irene gave me made a pretty loaf.)

Thank you! :-)

My fave 5 are: olive, coconut, rice bran, shea, and castor. Sometimes I use mango or cocoa butter, depending on the type of soap I'm making or who I'm making it for.

My favorites are olive, coconut, and avocado. I have tried sunflower but didn't have good results. I occasionally will add a butter to it but not very often.

I tried a recipe using coconut, sunflower, canola and 5% superfat with walnut oil. It gave a brilliant white base, but after 5 weeks it's still a little soft. I had these oils and lye and wanted to try my own recipe. I won't use them all again because of it though.

My base recipe has olive, coconut, palm, shea, avocado and castor. I'll swap out some of the fine oils and also reduce/increase olive, palm and coconut, depending on what I have on hand. I do try to look for the lightest colored olive I can find, though I made a castile out of organic OO and it cured light green, but once its been used a couple times is brilliant white. :)

My recipe uses coconut, palm, olive, canola, safflower, and grapeseed. Beautiful, lathery, hard bars every time.

My go-to blend is Olive, Coconut, Avocado, and Rice Bran. I've found a balance that I really like that turns out a beautifully smooth soap with a rich, stable lather.

It makes a rather greenish soap though, so I have to use quite a bit of colorant to get the aesthetic results I want.
