I found a facial cream recipe calling for Rosewater and rosehip seed oil.

Is their a difference in rosewater than distilled water, other than scent? Or can I use distilled water that I can mix with rebatch and any fragrance I choose and not have a rose scent.

Also where can I purchase rosehip see oil and what benefits does it have and/or what can it be mixed with?

Thanks,
Debbie

You said rebatch. Are you wanting to make a lotion or cream or a rebatched soap?

Soap with the rebatch. You add distilled water? If I use rosewater for rebatch, then soap will have a rose scent.

That's why I wanted to know if it would be fine to just use distilled water and rosehip seed oil for the facial cream, but the recipe calls for rosewater. If its not beneficial I'd just as soon use distilled water, as I may change fragrances for the facial cream.

Depending on the age of the soap, you won't need much of either distilled water or rosewater. As far as the scent of rosewater in a rebatch, I don't think you will get much of a scent.
Rosewater is nice in a lotion or a cream as it doesn't involve as much heat like in a rebatch soap.

No, I'm wanting to know do I need rosewater for the facial lotion instead of using distilled water?
Is there a difference in using one or the other.

I can use distilled water for the rebatch, but if I need rosewater for the facial lotion, there will be no rosy smell to the soap?

And will the rosewater have a rose smell in the facial lotion? Just in case I want to change to a different fragrance that is not a rose fragrance?

O.k. I understand. This is the ingredients for the facial lotion:
Beeswax, Rosehip seed oil; that I understand is very good for the face, Extra Virgin Coconut oil, and 6 to 10 tsp. rosewater, plus apricrot kernel oil and jojoba oil.

From my understanding apricot kernel oil is very good. Instead of purchasing jojoba oil, I was going to use sweet almond oil that I already have.
Does sweet almond oil blend well with the apricot kernel oil, or can I just use the sweet almond oil, I purchased from GNC.

I don't know if they have apricot kernel oil at GNC, but know they have Avacoda oil. Does sweet almond oil and avocado oil blend well together?

Since I've never made this before, it can be confusing as what one thing is just as good as another and I don't want to purchase things I don't care for, just to be a waste, or 2 carrier oils, if I don't need them right now. And have no idea if the rosewater is any better to use than distilled water.

All of this will be for me first, so I could always try the apricot kernel oil or avacoda oil later on and see the difference.
If anyone has tried both apricot kernel oil and avacodo oil, let me know which is best and why.

Also I've never used essential oils and I'm totally lost. What if you hate the smell, yuck. Anyone know what Rosehip Seed Oil smells like, pleasant? Also carrot seed oil is good for the skin. Have no idea about that one either, but on this web site, www.greenbootliving.com she claims those two oils mix well together.

Sorry I'm so stupid and confusing about this, but I never used essential oils and since they cost more, I don't want to waste too much, but since these will be used on me first, if its good for my skin, then that will be fine with me.

Example: I have tree tee oil and don't care for the smell of it. What could this be mixed with where it smells good.

Totally lost here and will take all advice from you experts who make this type stuff. I've only made candles and know what I'm doing there, but I only used fragrance oils, but isn't essential oils better for the skin?

Help!
Thanks
Debbie

Water and oils will not mix without an emulsifier. You will also need a preservative. Go to Susan's blog and read about basic lotion making. http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/2 ... otion.html
I would not use beeswax in any lotion as it can make it draggy on the skin. Beeswax is not an emulsifier. Over time, water based and oil based ingredients will separate.
You can use any oils or butters that you like. Which ones depends on what type of a lotion you are formulating and what type of skin.
I would do more research on each oil you think you might like before you make anything. That way you are not wasting your ingredients.
You will need a true preservative. Vitamin E or Grapefruit seed extracts are NOT preservatives. They are anti-oxidants. They help extend the shelf life of oils, but will do nothing for mold, germs or bacteria.
I have a sticky on preservatives> viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5032
Susan also has a post on preservatives. http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/p ... tives.html
You can also purchase her Lotionmaking 101 e-book. http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/2 ... -done.html

I'm getting those too. Just don't know if I need rosewater or just use distilled water, or have any idea what rosehip seed oil smells like.

Like soapbuddy said, there is really not much difference between distilled water and rose water, won't affect your cream any differently either way, other than rose water might lend a rosy scent to the cream and maybe give the cream more of a therapeutic benefit than distilled water would. If you want a (possible? not sure about this) therapeutic benefit, use the rosewater. If you don't, or want to go the simpler, cheaper way, use distilled water.

You were asking about companies that sell rose hip seed oil. I know Mountain Rose Herbs does, but I am sure there are other companies out there that do as well, so do a google search and I'm sure you can find some. There is also more information on MRH's page on rose hip seed oil, about why it is good for skincare recipes, what it's nature is, etc., so hopefully that will answer your questions about rose hip seed oil.

https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/produ ... il/profile

Most all fats and oils blend well together, so whatever oils you choose to use should mix fine with each other. It is the oils and water that don't like to mix, as Irena explained.

Apricot kernel oil and sweet almond oil are very, very similar, so you can use them interchangeably in your cream recipe. I know that these two oils are often used for creams, lotions, etc. because they soak into the skin really well and quickly. I'm not familiar with avocado oil or jojoba oil, but I'm pretty sure avocado oil is also very similar to apricot kernel and sweet almond. The more you use different oils, the more you will become familiar with all their different properties and develop your own favorites. Some of the oils can be very similar at first glance, but there must be little differences because people have their favorites anyway. Like you said, you don't want to buy a bunch of carrier oils right now and become overwhelmed, so just stick with the one you have for your first try at a cream. If your recipe calls for apricot kernel, but you have sweet almond on hand, it's fine to just use the sweet almond if you want. By all means, experiment with apricot kernel and avocado oil later, but no need to overwhelm yourself on your first try.

As for fragrance oils and essential oils, since you make candles, you may be thinking that you can't use candle fragrance oils in skincare products. And you would be correct! That could be harmful to the skin. However, there are hundreds and hundreds of fragrance oils formulated for soap, lotions, bath bombes, creams, etc. (Bramble Berry has a huge selection!) So if you like FOs and are familiar with them, use them to scent your cream. They are easy. Just make sure you get a skin-safe one.

However, that's not to discourage you from using essential oils if you want to, because you are correct when you say aren't essential oils better for your skin. Essential oils have therapeutic properties, while fragrance oils do not. There is a smaller selection of essential oils, but there are many that smell wonderful. Tea tree oil is one of the essential oils that has a controversial scent - it's very funky and musky and a lot of people, understandably, don't like it. But don't let that give you a bad impression of EOs; you can get some very heavenly smelling ones! Some that smell good on their own are lavender, orange, rosemary, lemon and peppermint.

It is your preference whether you want to use EOs or FOs, but know that you can use either.

Hope that helps! :)

Thank you Olivia,

I know I can use body safe fragrances in lotions and will start there, but I'm looking for essential oils that say they are for mature skins, like the rosehip

I've heard lavender and rosemary and chamomile are too. Rosewater may be too or may be used to enhance the rosehip oil. I may get a small amount to try.
