I've been mold shopping, and recently discovered adjustable molds and am liking the idea of them. I've found them in 5-1 lb., 4-1 lb., 3-1 lb., and 2-1 lb. designs. Has anyone used these before? Could someone explain how these work, exactly? Before I buy one, I'd like some others' input on them.

Also, does it matter about the type of wood a mold is made out of? Do some last longer? Do some insulate better?

Thanks all!

Can you post a link? My husband made my molds before I discovered the silicone log molds. I'm wondering if they have a short end that is moveable to make the loaf different lengths.

I have molds we made out of scrap plywood so just about any wood will work. I might not be as pretty as Baltic Birch, but you can't beat the price!
I cut a piece of wood the width of my log mold and use that to adjust the size of my 5# mold. It fits snuggly and all I do is line as usual. No need for a bunch of different size molds. :D

Here you go goodcleanfun. I found some on Etsy. What do you think?

3-to-1 lb.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/155902304/ ... ref=market

4-to-1 lb.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/180820603/ ... ref=market

Thanks ljm1180, I was wondering if the adjustable end would fit snuggly, or if it needed to be secured.

So the type of wood does not matter too much?

Unless anyone has had any bad experiences with these, this is probably what I will go for.

I have molds like this. They came from Richard at SoapHutch online.

They look fine, looks like similar to what my husband made me. The end pieces are moveable to make different lengths. I use white contac paper to line my wood molds, I use the pieces I cut away to form corners as tape. I don't know why, but I always had problems with freezer paper.

You can also use a shoe box or other type of box that you like the shape of as a soap mold by lining it the same way as a wood mold. We buy canned dog food by the case, and the cardboard half boxes it comes in are great for use as a tray type mold.

Thanks everyone, this is what I will go with, then! But one more question: how do you know where to adjust the end pieces to if you want a 2 or 1 lb. mold? How far do you move the end pieces in? I would like my bars to be a consistent height no matter what capacity I adjusted the mold to. Are there lines on the sides of the mold or something to show you where the 1, 2, 3, etc. pound sizes are? How do you do this, soapbuddy, since you have such a mold?

No problem! I just happened to find them when I was looking for molds to buy. The design looks really handy to me!! You only have to buy one mold instead of three or four different sized ones!
