When my son was first born, there were 3 dogs in the house, full of fleas. No matter what I did, nothing worked, until someone suggested boiling up rosemary leaves then putting the liquid into a spray bottle. And also sprinkling baking soda into the carpet to break the cycle of eggs into fleas and so on. I found that the rosemary liquid did pretty well keeping the fleas off of my then crawling son, and it wouldn't hurt him.

I've read that cats are very sensitive to essential oils - so be careful using an all natural flea repellent on them.

Yes I have made a shampoo that seems to keep the fleas off my two curly coated retrievers (large dogs 44kg each).

I used an organic castile liquid base (basically because I am a bit lazy and needed something gentle), some eo's namely cedar (known bug repellant), rosemary (bug repellent), lemon tea tree (known here in Australia as an aboriginal bug repellant much stronger lemon smell than citronella), peppermint (to cool any hot spots), lavender (bug repellent). I didnt use neem oil as it can cause allergic reactions in some dogs, particularly small breed dogs, and I didnt use pennyroyal as that is a known abortive herb. I sell this shampoo to breeders here in Australia & I didnt want to be responsible for any premature births etc of prize dogs. So far I havent had anyone say it hasnt worked and it is also used in a mobile dog wash company. No allergic reactions and more importantly no fleas either. I also sell a spritz for after and between washes with apple cider and either lemon tea tree or eucalyptus depending on the preference of the person buying it. Both are bug repellants. Peppermint can be used if there are known hot spots. Also this should be kept away from the eyes of the dog as it will really sting.

As mentioned before this cannot be used on cats as cats cannot tolerate any essential oils and it may in fact be fatal.
