If I am wanting to make a tattoo after care cream, what would you recommend? Here are the big no no's of aftercare, No petroleum based products, beeswax is generally out. It needs to promote skin healing and help protect against moisture. I was thinking of taking my basic lotion recipe and tweaking it so there is a bit more e-wax, no stearic acid. Use lavender eo. I have avacado oil, and sweet almond oil, and shea butter. I also have olive oil. My hubby and I really like tattoos and have several and I am tired of using A&D because it has both Lanolin and Petrolatum, so it is not the best stuff. Any advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm just thinking off the top of my head here, but think of the qualities you want it to have:

promote healing
antibacterial
suppleness/moisture
reduce inflammation

you know, all the things you want for your tattoo while it's new. Then, see which oils give those properties. For me, I'd say aloe might be a good one to have in there...

I agree with Soapbuddy (as usual) a "balm" type of stick without beeswax would be best. Aloe, shea butter, kukui nut oil*, sweet almond. those all sound good to me.

* in Hawaii they use Kukui Nut Oil for sunburn and any kind of skin inflamation as well as aloe. They have a lot of practice with sunburn there!

Very true. I don't think I would know how to achieve that though. Not too worried about SPF though in an aftercare product. I will keep reading up on properties of different oils and lotion bar recipes. I think that is a good idea.

Hi:

I have several tats myself. I got them long before I started making my own body care products. The after-care lotion that the tattoo artist recommended was unscented.

I'm wondering if a fragrance or essential oil would be irritating. Perhaps best to leave it unscented??

I thought about that too but the ingredients left unscented smell like soap. If you look up tattoo aftercare ingredients, most of the products out there are scented. I don't think it needs to be heavily scented but something that takes away the soap smell.

LOL! It changed my original word (which wasn't bad by the way but started with an a) to soap. It certainly doesn't smell like soap. It smells bad.

Well (scented or not  ) I think that it is a great idea and could sell very well in tattoo shops (especially with really cool packaging).

I have horses and I use my home-made body butter on their hooves as a natural conditioner. It works great. Most commercial hoof dressing is full of gross chemicals and it stinks (plus it is really expensive). I'm thinking about marketing my natural hoof dressing and taking it to horse shows with me to see if there would be any interest in it.

I totally think that would work. I used to have horses and I hated putting stuff on their hooves. Fairly soon we will be opening a tattoo studio and I hope to have something to market. I will also be putting my soaps in there.
