Hi one and all

I have been trying to find a recipe for Aloe Vera soap, but without success.

However my Wholesaler sells the Aloe Vera Gel and recommends that if using in soap use at 1%

How would this work, do I substitute some water for the gel or do I just add to the mix. I have looked on a lye calculator and there is no mention of Aloe Vera Gel for obvious reasons

Many thanks

Ian

Aloe doesn't have fats in it, so that's why it's not in lye calculators.

You just replace your water with the aloe. I've seen soapers use aloe as all of their water.

Just make sure that there's no additives to the aloe gel.

Hi Genny

Thanks for your reply so if using 270g of water replace with 270g of aloe Vera Gel. Would I then add the Sodium Hydroxide to the Aloe Vera Gel.

Many thanks

Ian

Yes, you would just add your lye to the aloe juice/gel. You can substitute all or part of the water in your recipe with aloe. I've made several batches with aloe juice and the stuff I get at the grocery store is fine, but read the labels. A little citric acid and sodium benzoate as a preservative is fine. You just don't want anything with guar gum (will seize your soap) or added sugar. Enjoy!

Make sure that your aloe gel has no polymers in it, as that can make the soap seize. You want just plain aloe juice.

I have Aloe vera plants and I bought some aloe vera gel but it is more fluid than the gel I scrape off the aloe leaves?

Do they add water to the bought Aloe Vera gel? It's going to take a lot of scaping to get that much gel!

I froze my gel and then gradually added the lye, would the lye destroy the properties of the Aloe?

Aloe scrapped from the leaves will turn into a liquid. It won't stay as a gel. Commercial made aloe gel has polymers in it so it's thicker. Whether any properties from the aloe survive the high pH of lye is anyone's guess.
