Teach Soap

I made a mistake in my soap recipe today. I had made a large batch of soap this morning and only had a little bit of lye left. Since I have more on order, I decided to make a small batch of soap to use the rest.

I mistakenly looked at the larger recipe for at least one and maybe two of my oils. My smaller recipe called for 97 grams of castor oil, and I used 109 grams. I didn't think it would make such a big difference, and I had used all of my lye anyway, so I figured I would just go with it. I made the loaf CPOP because I had a beautiful pink swirl that I thought would look nice if it was bright. My loaf liquified in the oven. I've read about that happening, but this is my first. I though I had only screwed up the castor oil, but I'm wondering now if maybe I also looked at the larger recipe for coconut oil as well. However, there was a little bit of batter left over and I poured it into a small silicone brownie mold and those CP soaps look just fine, no separation, so maybe it's the heat. It was a goat milk soap, and I guess that was a mistake putting it in the oven as well.

Here is my recipe:

Olive Oil 50%
Coconut Oil 25%
Castor Oil 8%
Kokum Butter 5%
Rice Bran Oil 12%

Made with Goat milk, SF 8%, 36% water (goat milk) as percent of oil

I'm hoping it does something to fix itself as it cools. What say you experts?

Ouch. I feel your pain. That's what happened to me when I set my oven on fire. It was my first milk soap and I learned the hard way that milk soaps and CPOP do not play well together. It separated, rose out of the mold and ... you know the rest of the story. I "think" I recall Irena saying that when that happens, she just dumps it straight into the crock pot and hot processes on the spot, but definitely do not take my word for that. What a day the gremlins have had!

Jenny, I remember reading your post, thank goodness I caught mine early before it boiled over. Apparently I don't learn from others mistakes!

Thanks for the advice! Will I still be able to throw it in the crockpot in the morning? That will be 24 hrs later.

I'm so disappointed that it's an ugly soap now, my swirls were so pretty.

You can cook it in the crock pot in the morning, but it might take longer to melt since the soap would have cooled off by then.

congrats! Don't feel bad! I have some rebatch like that. It turned out a fleshy pink color, like lunch meat. Eww. Don't even want to use it in my own shower...

Hahaha, Jenny, yes they do look like they are close relatives! It still smells good, so that's something. I'll have to add it to my ugly duckling pile. By the way, your other soaps are beautiful!

Melifera, fleshy is such a descriptive term, I think mine is also a fleshy pink. Makes me shiver a little, lol.
