I recently attended an Essential Oils workshop and the host (who represented Young Living) how she used essential oils in her life. Her family members often use it topically but sometimes they ingest it. For instance, she puts a drop of lemon EO in her water, and sometimes her husband puts multiple drops under his tongue to help with migraines.

Are you as confident in the EOs from BB? I've always loved their EOs for soaps, lotions, bath salts, etc. However I'm wondering if they're safe enough to use in small quantities like I just mentioned.

Yes I am very confident with essential oils from BrambleBerry unlike MLM companies like the one you mention. Essential oils should NEVER be ingested and I don't care which multiple level company tells you this. I am a Certified Aromatherapist with over 20 years of experience and 1,700 school hours of training. I will never advocate using essential oils in such an unsafe manner. I am not a doctor and neither are they. You might want to read this link: http://barefootdragonfly.blogspot.com/2 ... drink.html
I have more like this if you are interested.

I use essential oils in my products at a safe rate and I follow IFRA guidelines.

Please don't get sucked in by YL's very unsafe essential oil use practices. Using EO's undiluted or ingesting them like that is not safe. There are A LOT of complaints from people who have followed those practices of essential oils and have been harmed. Almost all the people that sell them do not have any real aromatherapy training or medical training. Their only training is to sell. I've been to the YL parties, I've taken the DoTerra certification, there is no real relevant training to the safe use of Essential Oils.

1 drop might not seem like lot, but when it's undiluted, it's a lot considering how many lemons (or other plant matter) it takes to make up that one drop. They say that the reason other EO companies say to never ingest or use EO's undiluted on the skin is because the other companies EO's are impure. When in reality it's because of the purity of the oils that it's unsafe to do so.

@ soapbuddy: What are MLM companies? And what is considered a Certified Aromatherapist, and how do you become one?

Young Living has this information about how to use Lavender EO on their website:

Soothe minor burns by applying 2–3 drops of lavender essential oil to the affected area.
Rub lavender essential oil on dry or chapped skin to moisturize the affected area.

Even though Lavender is considered one of the gentlest of essential oils, it seems to me that using any essential oil undiluted would be too strong for your body to handle.

I don't know much about Young Living's essential oils, but the way the owners of a company use EOs does not necessarily dictate the quality of the EOs they sell. Just because the Young Living owners may misuse EOs, doesn't mean their EOs are poor quality.

I do love Bramble Berry's EOs, but I don't know if they are therapeutic quality, if that is what you are looking for. I'm not sure how you would determine if an EO was therapeutic or medical grade or not.

"Therapeutic grade" is a fiction concocted by the likes of Young Living and doTerra to justify their pricing. You can ensure your EOs are therapeutic grade by printing out stickers that say "therapeutic grade" and sticking them on the bottles of any EO you own. Voila!

MLM is Multi-Level Marketing, a somewhat more politic term for pyramid schemes.

Multi-level marketing is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of the other salespeople that they recruit. So the more people they recruit, the more money they make. MLM companies oils are not necessarily any better or worse. They want you to believe that theirs are better, so they would make more sales. There is no such thing as "therapeutic" grade, as there isn't an official designation for such in the US. It's just a marketing term.

Certified Aromatherapist is where you enroll in a accredited school, and choose the aromatherapy diploma, certificate, or degree program. I went for the certificate and studied for approximately 6 months. Then you have to pass a test in order to become certified. I didn't choose the degree program as that's a 2 year study and very expensive.

I used to naively use lavender oil on my daughter undiluted for minor scrapes and scratches when she was little. She is now allergic to lavender, even though I used it cautiously.

There is some information about ingesting EOs in the book by Valerie Wormwood, The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy. But prob the doterra blog is a better place to chat about it.

I did some research and found that some people who use essential oils neat or internally see great health benefits, while some people have terrible reactions or become sensitized. Why, I don't know! :?

Soapbuddy, that IS very interesting that they deleted that comment. Ill keep that in mind thank you. And for the tidbit about the sensitization of lavender as I'd never heard of that before.

Holy smokes, i'm going to be pretty careful w/ essential oils now that i read up on sensitization. For people that want to use lavender medicinally it is probably a lot safer to buy a book on herbology and either make a tea out of the flowers, extract it into a tincture using ethyl acohol, or infuse it (the flowers, in lavender's case) into the olive oil u put on your salad by adding 25 grams of dried lavender flower into a mason jar containing 1 liter of olive oil for a couple weeks. So maybe is not such a good idea to put EOs in homemade deodorant & lotions?

EOs are fine in skin care products as long as they're used at safe usage rates. You would have to use an awful lot of lotion with 1% lavender EO to court the same sensitization risk as using undiluted lavender EO on your skin.

Robert Tisserand is probably the world's leading expert on essential oils. He has a very informative website: roberttisserand.com
