Hey everyone! I'm fairly new to soaping. I've been doing it for about a year. So, here is my problem.
I made a batch of cold process soap the other day. As soon as I took it out of the mold and cut it I noticed just a couple of orange spots. Ive heard of the DOS but I've never heard of them happening so fast. My recipe used coconut, castor and palm oils, vegetable shortening and Shea butter. I used 38% water ratio, Brambleberry lye flakes and 5% superfat. I fragranced with eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils. I colored using TD dispersed in distilled water and a pale green mica in olive oil. I put it in my PVC pipe mold. It unloaded and cut beautifully 36 hours later.

Oh I should also mention, I soaped at room temp and the batch traced super fast.

It's possible that it's DOS. I got DOS in my castile within 24 hours. Did you check for zap? If you recipe traced fast, it could also be the fragrance oil. I prefer not to soap at room temp as I've had trouble with this method before.

The times when I've had soaps develop DOS, they've also had an "off" smell, like rancid oil, even though at the time of soaping, none of my oils smelled rancid. Any funky smell from your soap?

Irena, you had DOS in 24 hours?! Wow, I never realized it could happen that fast. I've only had it happen over weeks or months. That's good to know.

Thanks for the responses guys! I'll keep these guys separate and just watch them. I don't sell any of my soaps (I'm still new and just a hobbyist) so at least there won't be any revenue lost. I'm just baffled as to why it happened so fast.

Does the rosemary oleoresin add any fragrance or discoloration?

I've tried rosemary oleoresin extract and it discolored my batch. I haven't used it since.

Thanks for the info! :)

So, I went back and looked at all of my supplies and looked at the other 2 batches of soap I made that day. I used the same recipe in those other 2 batches, with the only difference being the fragrance. I think the tea tee essential oil I used must have been bad. I bought it from hobby lobby so it may be of inferior quality. One of my other batches was unscented as I had planned to grate it up and use it as decoration on another project. So that's making me think it's the essential oil also. What do you guys think, can essential oils be responsible for DOS?
