OK, I excitedly ordered some Cedarwood Virginian (Juniperus virginiana). I have spent all of my life where these trees grow wild. The reddish wood is so unmistably aromatic, its wood used for cedar chests and for lining closets, among many other things. Anyone out there share my love of this tree?

Well, I must say that the EO I got was disappointing, to say the least. It smelled absolutely nothing like what I had hoped for. That's OK. Experiment and trial and error.

So, does anyone have a source for this fragrance who can say that it's close to the real thing?

Feel free to PM me.

Thanks!!! I really appreciate it as I have high hopes for getting that essence in a soap.

You got the wrong sub-species. Try Cedrus deodora.

Sorry if I come across as a plant snob, but I have been into conifers since my teens. I am looking for the aroma of Juniperus virginiana, which colloquially, is called the red cedar.

I bought an EO labelled as Cedarwood (Virginiana) because it had "Juniperus virginiana" in parentheses beside the name - exactly the tree I am looking for.

There is no other living thing that even comes close to having this tree's aroma.

This seller missed the boat.

But, thanks soapbuddy. I appreciate your help.

I can't help you with a f.o. recommendation but I also love this tree. We have many of them growing on our acres. There is a very large one growing at the corner of our deck. It is covered in blue berries most years. It is wonderful to watch all the birds feed on the berries all winter. My favorites are the cedar waxwings and blue birds. We also cut cedar branches every year at Christmas to make wreaths. The scent is heavenly. Cedar is the true Christmas scent to me. I hope you find this an oil with the true scent. Let us know.

I would love to get a scent that smells like a Florida orange grove in blossom, no FO is even close. The closest I have been able to get is Neroli EO which is way too expensive to put in soap...for me anyway!

A number of EO's don't really smell like the actual plants - rosemary is the one I really wish would smell like the plant...

Perhaps you could at least try the variety Irena mentioned, just to see if it smells more like what you were thinking. Or, try the same EO from a different company, maybe. Mountain Rose Herbs sells the particular type you were looking for.

Where did you order your initial oil from? You did try it in a soap, I'm assuming? Fragrances can smell different in soap than they do straight from the bottle, but you probably know that.

I am currently ordering Cedarwood Virginia (Juniperus virginiana) EO from a couple other sources. Once I have them all in, I will decide which is closest to how I think it should smell and, then, make a batch. I did not make a batch with the first EO I received because, to me, it smelled like, well, dirt. I really do not want to mention the company because it might be my nose that's at fault! PM me if you wish and I will tell you.

Thanks for the referral StokedTopHat. That is not a source I have tried.

Thanks everyone!

Cedarwood (Virginiana) NDA New Directions Aromatics dot com. It is a wonderful blender.

Thanks, mella.

Tell me what you have blended Cedarwood Virginia with. I'd love to me.

Thanks!

from BB description of cedarwood
blended with Orange and Patchouli essential oil, but Bergamot, Clary Sage, and Ylang Ylang are also good choices. Use Cedarwood essential oil as an alternative to the more expensive and endangered Sandalwood essential oil. Cedarwood is a tree native to North America and has a rich history of traditional uses by Native Americans.

I like it with rosemary and also with vanilla.
