Teach Soap

Hi,

I added soy lecithin, in powder form, to my melting oils and at the end there was a lump that would not go away. It looked like a gel capsule or something! Does anyone know what this is?

Also, is there a difference in results between liquid lecithin and powder? I know liquid is pretty sticky stuff so just working with it could be tough.

Lecithin is water soluble. It won't melt with your oils. Why are you adding lecithin?

I was using it to slow down trace with beer soap.

Am I supposed to add it to my lye/water?

If the powder, you will need to prehydrate it in some water. If it's a liquid lecithin, you can add it to your cooled off lye water. If you boil off the alcohol from the beer and soap it cold, you won't need lecithin. I make beer soaps all the time with no problems with accelerating trace.

How do you make beer soap with no accelerated trace? How large is the batch? I put liquid lecithin into the oils just before I added the lye and water then began stirring. Is that not a good way to go?

For my beer soaps, I boil off the alcohol, then soap it very cold. I have no need to add lecithin. Sometimes lecithin can make your soaps spongy and soft for a longer time.
