Hey Everyone!

long time not post. :D

I have a question. Do any of you have family who KNOW that you make soap and sell soap for a living, yet still buy you other shop's soap as a gift when they see you?

If so, what is your take on that, and what do you say?

I love it!!! I don't sell my soap (yet!) but I do make M&P as a hobby. My family knows I like soap, so they will sometimes buy me other crafters' soaps for Christmas and what not. I like most handmade soap, whether I made it or not. I enjoy receiving soap as a gift because I like to try out different soaps, I feel like I am using a professional's bar, and you can always get new ideas and inspiration from others' soap. I don't just absolutely love every single soap someone buys me, but they're all better than what you can get at the store, so I'll take them! Those are my personal feelings on the subject...

My cousin was telling me about her SO's skin issues......red, dry, itchy. No problem, says me, I'll send you some nice goat's milk castile. Oh no, she said. The doctor told him to only use Dove! Sigh. How do you tell your cousin that doctor's don't study soap in medical school. They watch those ads on TV and fall for them too. This same cousin buys me soap when she goes to craft fairs. I never actually asked her why. I prefer to think that she feels that as a soapmaker, I'd be interested in other people's soaps, which I am. When I do craft fairs, I usually buy from other soapers because I enjoy good, handmade soap, whether I've made it or not. So when she gives me some, I smile and say gee, thanks!

I love to try other soaps, so I don't mind at all if I receive soap as a gift. :D

I Wish they would buy me soaps! If they did, it would show me they are paying attention to my interests (instead of buying me jewelry for the last 14 years even though I don't wear any)!

I would not look at it in a negative way at all dragonlady.

Now if they were buying it for themselves and NOT from you, I might be a little put off....

I like to try other soaps. I will occasionally buy from other soap vendors at craft shows so I can try something different, and support a fellow soaper. :D

I don't sell, so I really would not mind someone supporting another soapmaker. Maybe they are embarrassed to buy from you thinking they should be given a family discount? Are you close enough to one of them to ask what gives?
What I grimace at is the advice the medical profession gives and because it comes from the "doctor" it is true. I had a friend visit this last winter and before she left I offered her a bar of soap. She turned me down. I asked if it was because of the scent.... I know some smells will give her a migraine. She replied no, she has sjogrens disease and the doctor told her to wash with either plain water or ivory! I encouraged her to use the plain water but of course then she went on to say how mild ivory was because it floats! I almost started laughing but held back. She is a librarian so I encouraged her to look up some info on soap. I doubt she will because she already has 'the scoop from her doctor'. I never claim to know all but will search out new information all the time.

I have just started making soap and I still buy soap from my favourite soap maker for myself and as gifts!
I aspire to make a bar of soap just like hers!
I hope to sell my soaps, I can't possibly use them all, and I am running out of space!

I'm a hobbyist that is taking the steps to be official this year! My mom doesn't use any other soaps! Big brand or not! She uses me like a factory

My dad on the other hand is a jerk. :? He still uses Irish Springs and generic brand liquid soaps. He actually left the gingerbread man soap I gave him on top of the toilet

I feel you on that one. When a family member won't trust you. I know it hurts.. My husband won't use any of mine and he's my husband.

I want to call him sometimes what you called your father. But... he's the one that buys my supplies... :(
