Thanks guys....I'm still thinkin' on whether or not it's for me...

Vegetable shortening is normally made out of soybean oil. It's cheap and readily available and produces a mild, stable lather. You can use it in combination with other exotic or moisturizing oils. I use this as half of my fats to keep costs down occasionally. It's a good filler and makes a very hard white bar when used alone and when mixed with other oils it makes a wonderful hard bar of soap. You can use Crisco (I use store brands) shortening as a base oil or combine it with other, harder oils for better results. I would recommend using it as base up to 50% of total oils.

A recipe I've used has had:

Castor 4%
CO 33%
Cocoa Butt 2%
Crisco 46%
OO 15%

5% Superfatted

and I've really enjoyed it. Came out nicely not the best out there but still nice enough inmho.

Scores on soapcalc: 42hard, 22clean, 53cond, 26bubbly, 23creamy
