Has anyone ever come across an EO or FO that smells like purple grapes? My Texas mountain laurel is beginning to bloom, and while it's a short season of only 3 to 4 weeks, I look forward to it every year. The fragrance is overpowering and it smells just like a Grape Nehi with maybe a touch of lilac. I'd love to do a mountain laurel soap but the big stumbling block is mixing up a similar fragrance. And learning to deal with accelerating floral EOs and FOs. And concocting the deep blue-purple color. I'll get there. Maybe sometime next year. Challenges-R-Me.

I like one from Peak, though I suggest an anchor of some sort as it faded for me. A little kaolin clay should help!

Ohh and NG has a ! But It discolours to a "medium orange brown", might take a couple of test batches to be able to colour it just right so that the discolouration works with your other colourants.

Heather, you are AWESOME! Guess what my next soap supply order's gonna be? :D This one is definitely going to take some experimentation on several fronts, but that's a big part of the soaping attraction for me. Have you (or anyone else) ever smelled a Texas mountain laurel? It's one of those flowers that hits you right upside the nose, lazily circles around your sinuses and doesn't leave your head for quite a while even after you're out of firing range. Not that I want my soap that strong, but it's something you don't forget and I've never come across anything else quite like it. 8)

WSP also has three grape FOs()
grape, grape soda, and galactic grape.

Rosie - thanks for the extra source from WSP. Looks like I'll have a lot more fragrance mixing and experimenting to do. Like that's a bad thing?! 8)

Heather, since you're in NJ, you could maybe stand next to some blooming lilac bushes while drinking a grape soda and get a rough idea of what a Texas mountain laurel smells like. Grape hyacinth is somewhat similar but not nearly strong enough.

I think mountain laurel throws the strongest per/flower daytime fragrance I've ever experienced in nature. After dark, my night-blooming jasmine wins hands down. That stuff is unbelievable. You smell nothing while the sun is out, but at sunset the little nondescript flowers start pumping out fragrance and it gets stronger as the night progresses. Head out to get the paper before the sun comes up and it chases you back into the house screaming for mercy. Too bad it froze to the ground this winter (boo!) but new shoots are popping up and I should have blooms by late May. That's another one I wish I could bottle. It's similar to your typical jasmine, but has much more depth.

Here's a pic of the mountain laurel. Butterflies and bees love it!

Woo hoo!! Heather, I can't thank you enough for turning me on to Peak. Just got my grape FO and lilac FO order, and they threw in a sample of Bird of Paradise FO. THAT'S IT! The grape and lilac were close enough, but the addition of the Bird of Paradise nailed it. What a happy accident! Now to see what the lye does to it.

Tell us how well it turns out! I'm intrigued by your description of the scent and wish I could sniff it myself. :D
