Teach Soap

My daughters friend offered to give me some goats milk from her farm the next time they milk. I've only ever used powdered milk that I reconstitute. It there anything special I have to do to fresh milk before using it in soap?

Freeze it into ice cubes.

Good question! I, too, wonder about using milk in soap. I have never made soap with fresh milk, but have always wondered - WHY do you have to freeze/refrigerate liquid milk before using it in CP soap?? I've heard you have to do it, but WHY?

From what I gather, the lye burns the milk, so it goes a bright orange, and smells , by keeping the temps down it keeps your milk white and doesn't burn it?
If nobody notices the difference in the soap between fresh and powdered, it would be much easier to just add dried goats milk to your batch?

Lye doesn't actually burn the milk unless the milk is warm to start off. It's normal for it turn yellow to orange. It will smell gosh awful if it were to overheat! If it's frozen until slushy and you add the lye slowly, stirring all the time, you should be fine. Not gelling your soap will keep the finished soap lighter in color.

I find using powdered milk easier, but if I had a source for fresh milk, I'd use it all the time.

I might have missed it but I didn't see where the difference is in powered vs Fresh. I would think we miss some of the fat that is in real goat milk but I'm wishing the goat people would know .. or someone that does know say what the difference is.

Powdered milk is simply desiccated, or dried, milk. The only difference is that 99+% of the water has been removed via evaporation.
