I measured out some FO into one of those little 2 oz portion cups, and then later was smelling the FO WAY more than I should have been. The FO dissolved it in less than 30 minutes. I recall reading not to store FO in plastic, but a reason wasn't given. I assumed it was because the plastic would hold the scent. Is this another reason?

The countertop smells VERY strongly of the FO, will that go away over time? Is there a specific method I should use to clean it that will help? It's not bothering me excessively, but my husband and brother in law (who is visiting) are both highly susceptible to migraines so I need to do what I can asap.

Yep, FO's & EO's will eat right through most plastics that are not PET.

When I accidentally spill on my counter I wash it up quick with soap & water, then wipe the counter down with vinegar. Vinegar's pretty good at getting rid of smells.

Fragrance oils will melt plastic; especially any disposable plastic, like cups. How long ago did this happen? I would sprinkle some baking soda over the places where it spilled and leave it there for a while. Then take a damp, clean rag and wipe it all off. For any future endeavors, it's helpful to have some kitty litter on hand to absorb a spill.

Thanks guys! It had happened right before I posted it. DH resorted to just leaving a window open for several hours even though it was cold out. And the smell dissipated after a couple days.

Lesson learned.
